painkillas's Full Review: The Predator [PA] by Ice Cube
I am not an avid hip-hop listener and don't think I ever will be, but this album never stays out of my stereo for too long. Despite being a tad predictable by bragging about sex, money, and violence, Ice Cube has more to talk about than his own lifestyle. He often returns to his anger towards the police officers involved in the Rodney King beating and its aftermath. "Crew cut f***** / food for the maggots..." This album is an excellent record of the emotions of the following years. "To get some respect we had to tear this m###f*****r up..."
Between songs there are sound bites from those of Malcolm X to those of the cops, i.e. "I haven't beaten anyone this bad in a long time." These sound bites really add to the meaning of the songs that follow.
You will definitely feel the anger and bitterness of seeing and being subjected to injustices. Maybe that is why I am drawn to the words, because I can relate up to a certain level. And if you cannot, it will be an eye opener for you.
The song "Wicked" has a rock feel to it, you could even bang your head and mosh. And "It Was A Good Day" is nice and slow, "Gangsta's Fairytale 2" is comical. Hence, I like the variety of the songs, they don't blend into each other -- each standing out and original. Lyrics are awesome, flowing, clever, and articulate, but very likely offensive and at times violent.
