hello_nasty87's Full Review: Ritual de lo Habitual by Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction were formed from the ashes of (Singer) Perry Farrell's previous outfit Psi-Com, the band never acheived much sucess but managed to find a small yet devoted following playing a circuit of LA clubs and opening for The Cult in there LA gigs. There was friction within the band after they're poorly distributed, self titled 5 track EP was released, with the Psi-Com line up falling apart (Terry soon left the band and was followed closely by Rich and Marisca who left becuase of personal differences with Farrell) Eric Avery was brought in as the groups replacement bassist but the group disbanded completely before Avery even got to play a gig. When they met Farrell and Avery hit it off immediatley and played a jam together now known as "Mountain Song" and remains a favourite around Jane's Addiction fanatics circles. The 2 decided to form a band, bringing in members of local thrash band Dizastre, Namely Dave Navarro and drummer Stephen Perkins. The band now had its completed line up and started playing songs on the LA circuit under the name Jane's Addiction, after a close friend of Perry Farrell's drug problem, according to him it came to him when talking to his girlfriend Casey Nicolai on the subject of Jane. The band managed to collect a large following, some becuase of Perry with Psi-Com and others ecuase of there fresh sound. The band recorded a live debut album which came out to much critical acclaim and a label biddings war ensued, eventually the band signed a deal with Warner Brothers records becuase they were willing to allow Farrell and co a lot of artist freedom. The band set to work on there second album soon after the first came out, the album Nothings Shocking featured a melding of punk, thrash metal, hair metal, funk, jazz and anything else imaginable, giving them tremendous crossover appeal, in the mean time the band opened for various bands like "The Cult" and "Love and Rockets" while simultanoueusly making fans of there own. Eventually the Nothings Shocking album came out to tremendous critical acclaim and winning over a lot of fans, some of the songs from this CD are favourites of fans, specifically "Ted, Just Admit It" - a song writted about serial killer Ted Bundy, the Afformentioned "Mountain Song" the beutiful ode to summer romance "Summertime Rolls" and the powerful "Ocean Size" - a song according to Farrell about being homeless as well as the 2 favourites from the first album "Jane Says" and the hyperactive "Pigs In Zen." shortly before the release of the album the band broke up over songwriting royalties, Farrell wanted more than the rest of the band, the rest of the band wanted the money split equally, the band reformed by the time the cd was released. The media set off wondering when the next album would be released, anticipation was high and in 1990 the band released Ritual De Lo Habitual, the album is a hugely acclaimed album but it also the last record made by the band for eleven years....
Jane's Addiction - Ritual De Lo Habitual (1990 - Warner Brothers)
1 - Stop!
A really great song to open an album with, also the first single released from the album. Its a fast, powerful song often interpreted to have something to do with the way man lives in the modern age. The song starts off with a fast, trashy funk riff given by Dave Navarro and quick Spitfire vocals given by Perry. The drums and the bass start simultaneously and chaos insumes, the song comes to a break down about 2/3's of the way through with "One come a day the water will run no man will stand for things that he has done." and then the song speeds up again, giving us an all over the place solo from Navarro and then suddenly its over.
"One come a day the water will run no man will stand for things that he has done"
2 - No Ones Leaving
One of the overlooked songs on the album, probably becuase it sits right between two classics. The song is about racial issues in Los Angeles, he would often state this before he played it live. It starts off with a funky bass hook from Avery and a funky ditty from Navarro the song takes off, with freakshow verses and the chorus of "Aint Nobody Leaving!" - unfortunatley the song is among the weakest on the album.
"Every way to show affection, how to dress to fit the occasion, wish we all waved"
3 - Aint No Right
An undisputed Jane's Classic, instrumentally and lyrically this is one of the best songs Jane's have ever written, if you search for Perry Farrell Quotes on the internet this quote will almost always be there "Aint No Wrong Now Aint No Right!" this song is as insightful Perry ever got, before or after this song. Henry Rollins described the song as having 'more stick to your grill insight than anything my father laid upon me.' the song itself relies on a heavy bass hook from Avery until it pounds into the chorus will full pelting electric guitar, this is definatley a good choice if your looking for a song to download from the album.
"Aint no wrong now aint no right, only pleasure and pain"
4 - Obvious
The weakest song on the album, this song was basically is about rumors about perry and his heroin addiction. its nothing more than filler materiel really, which is a bit dissapointing on a 9 track CD. This doesnt make the song bad, it just means its not up to par with the rest of the albums tracks, which are admitadly all standout. Dont skip past the song by any means, you may find something in it I did not, maybe your cursing at the screen for me saying this? this is just what I feel about the song.
"Hey, you don't know me! You don't know me but you just keep on looking at me down low"
5 - Been Caught Stealing
the most famous Jane's song around, mainly becuase of the Casey Niccolai directed video, the song is basically just an ode to shoplifting, the guitar on the song is played with an unplugged electric guitar for the first verse and the electric kicks in. Probably the most commercial Jane's Addiction song in existance. Never less the song is excellent and shows that on such an emotional album fun can and would be had by Farrell and Co.
"I been caught stealing, once when i was five, I enjoy stealing, its just as simple as that, well its just a simple fact, that when I want something man i dont wanna pay for it"
6 - Three Days
An epic classic is the best way i can describe Three Days, containing all the elements that made jane's such a terrific band, the song starts off with a subtle guitar hook (it might be a higher bass note, its hard to tell) which builds up into a chorus leading you to think that it might just follow a conventual Verse Chorus arrangement, wrong! the song twists and turns through every guitar riff imaginable while soaring vocals by farrell make you wonder why you havent discovered it before. Navarro's stunning guitar and avery's sturdy bass, not to mention Perkins smacking at the drums like they've just slept with his mother and killed his father. The song reaches a forceful climax and when its finished you feel either dissapointed with it being over or happy that you just listnened through such an amazing song. The standout song on Ritual de lo Habitual.
"Three days was the morning, three lovers in three ways"
7 - Then She Did...
Another epic, this Zeppelin esque classic stays with the same melody and guitar throughout but features strings and backing vocals from Farrell himself. The song is very very powerful and is another standout song from an album packed with classics, a reccomended download, the song was going to be called "Then she died" but Farrell thoguht it too obvious.
"She was unhappy, just as you were."
8 - Of Course
To bring you out of the mood of the two epics you get an odd little number next, the song is an indian themed song with a great "Its like slapping yourself in the face hook" this is another classic but might be for open minds like that of myself, this isnt a reccomended download but its definatley a fine song.
"of course this land is dangerous, all the animals are capably murderous"
9 - Classic Girl
Farrell pays homage to his girlfriend Casey Nicolai on this song and its a very nice ballad. a good song to finish an album with, although a feel then she did... would be a better choice, this was released as an abroad single and a video was made for the Jane's Addiction movie Gift. This is a good song to download and it shows perry's more emotional side
"Dinosaurs on the quilt I wore with a girl, such a classic girl..."
all in all this is a great record and a good choice for people looking to get into Jane's, i feel nothings shocking is a better album but this one is defintley worth a listen. Unfortunatley the band split up after this CD, drugs drove the band apart, while Perkins and Farrell were happy working with there problems, Avery and Navarro were not, so the band went there seperate ways, Perkins and Farrell formed the Quasi-Sucessful Porno For Pyros for 2 albums and Avery and Navarro formed "Deconstruction" who only made the one CD. This performance is yet to be topped by the reunited Jane's who are currently about to release there 3rd Studio album (Not counting 1997's Kettle Whistle, an album of outakes, live materiel and 2 new songs) Hypersonic and one prays that it reaches the Dizzy Highs of this album Nothings Shocking
