Nice Job (Reply to this comment)
by speeddemon531, in Music
I remember the Monkees renaissance in the mid-80's. They played the show on regular network TV back then (I didn't have cable...sigh), and I immediately developed a soft spot for the songs even though the humor went just a wee bit over my 10 year old head.
Nice job...

I didn't even know it was on network television. Only Nickelodeon. Nickelodeon also gave me "Nick Rocks" which showed really corny Weird Al videos all the time :)
Anyway, thanks for the comment.

Correction... (Reply to this comment)

Actually, it was Bob Rafelson who directed the film. Jack Nicholson co-wrote the screenplay.

what's so funny about peace, love, understanding, and jones, ltd? (Reply to this comment)
by voxpoptart
I know hardly anything about the Monkees. I just think it's cool that you've written four 5-star reviews in a row. Are Shilmafone and Crypticcradle and i getting to you after all this time?
cheers,

I'm with you and speed; I first took notice of the group in the mid 80's resurgence as well. It came on 5 days a week some summers, and my sis and I would be riveted to it every time it came on. Run DMC's "Mary, Mary" remains one of my favorite rap tunes just because they sampled the Monkees song...

As much as I enjoy most of the Monkees songs included on the album, all thoughts about them that come to mind have an oily taint ever since I saw Head two years ago. Good god, what a shameless piece of self-indulgent tripe. Imagine Help! with every single enjoyable thing stripped away.
Still, this really sounds like an enjoyable collection...

Wonderful trip down memory lane (Reply to this comment)
by mike.holmes
Even though I was a jazz fanatic in my teens (strange, I know), I liked the Beatles and, by extension, The Monkees. Their humor was corny, yet entertaining. As with much of the history I've lived through, I always miss something and you filled in some of the gaps. Thanks for the wonderful review.

No. It can't be so. I've got a few nasty ones up my sleeve :)
Really, I do.

You got nothin' if you don't got the Monkees!
In any case, I almost mentioned some of the other bands and groups that have sung many of the songs originally performed by the Monkees. But then I realized that it was quite a difficult task. But indeed, Run DMC kick(ed) some serious buttocks--as does Mary, Mary.
Thanks for the comment, Mad.

It is a very enjoyable collection. And fortunately, I haven't been soured by an experience with Head.

Your welcome. I hate writing such a long piece, but when it comes to Greatest Hits sorts of things I always find myself writing way the heck too much...
Eh. Oh well. Glad to have helped.

Yes I know that they were manufactured, yes I know they couldn't sing or play to begin with (not very well at least)... yes I know they were a Beatles clone...But I still like them!
I have this collection and it's great... as you say the last few songs are a bit weak but the rest still do it.
Nice review!

Thoughts from a not so randy scouse git.. (Reply to this comment)
by spiderkid
Good job!.. The monkeys hold fond memories for me from about the same period, and I'm sure the theme tune is forever etched on my mind as a result.
I've got a similar 'greatest hits', although I didn't get off quite so lightly as mine contains a further 5 tracks!...
The monkeys followed me into adulthood as 'Daydream believer' and 'I'm a believer' proved to be extremely popular hits on the dance floors of the cheesy venues we used to frequent on a Friday night, where no one would want to miss out on a raucous collective chorus of 'Cheer up sleepy Jean..'
Tom
Ps. I am duty bound to state that not all Liverpudlian's are randy gits, just some of us.. ;-p

I love the Monkees (Reply to this comment)
by Rocketgirl
The show was on afternoon reruns on cable when I was in high school in the late 70s. Its very bizarreness, plus the music, is what I liked! I don't particularly care who performed or wrote the music, it is only necessary that I like the SOUND of it! Good write-up. I agree that some are missing. I especially enjoy She. I also like Star Collector. Many of those on this collection, I personally consider stinkers. I have nearly all the albums, even Head. "More of the Monkees" is probably my favorite album. Yes, vinyl.
