Roth (Reply to this comment)

Great review! I own all six Van Halen albums, and a couple Van "Hagar". I've seen both Van Halen and Van "Hagar" as well as David Lee Roth solo (once with Stevie Vai on guitar). I also saw Hagar as a warm up act. I always enjoyed the showmanship and craziness of David Lee Roth, he was perfect for the bands style, Hagar, not so much. Anyway your review brought back memories, it was the 1984 tour that I saw Van Halen on.

Shelly, I think I own as much VH as you...(counts)...I've got 5, but that includes two hits compilations, so maybe you do win out after all.
Ditto what Paul said about compulsive fact-checkers in the audience.
And I probably fall into the minority of folks who likes Roth and Hagar fairly equally.
Final fun fact-"I'll Wait" was co-written by Michael (Doobie) McDonald!! How cool is that?

I agree it's definitely aged better than Jump for one...that said, Panama still rocks.
Thanks for stopping by. As always, it is appreciated.

An aside... (Reply to this comment)
by jackai
1984 was a great album, no doubt about that. But the single I love from VH the most is "Jamie's Cryin". I know, it's not even on 1984, but you'd agree that it has aged better than anything on 1984. No?

You praised Jump...I expected better from you Shelly
And only FOUR VH albums? Seeing as they made 5 great ones with Dave, you really need to get hopping

Thanks, Paul, for being the perennial voice of reason. You can likely expect a review of 5150 in the near future. I own exactly 4 Van Halen albums. Not much choice there, eh?
In any case, yeah...I love when my statements are pulled out of context.

I'm torn actually. I do (obviously) like some of Roth's earliest solo stuff but I also (like Paul above) enjoy 5150 a great deal. As far as whose side politically I take...well...not sure there to be honest. Sorry! Honesty is always teh best policy IMO.

Hmm...
I do beg to differ, but that's the joy of this site. What you've failed to miss is what else I say in this review. That they are both pop and hard rock and that they are the first of their kind to use synthesizers so successfully.
Eh. Oh well...thanks for stopping by.

Roth vs. Hagar (Reply to this comment)
by plorentz
I kinda straddle the two myself. My favorite two albums are 1984 and 5150. I don't really like anything else the band did before or after those two albums. And I don't care at all for either Hagar or Roth solo. (Okay, well I do have a soft spot for "Give to Live" - and I thought Dave's videos were funny).
-Paul
P.S. Isn't it nice to have a compulsive fact-checker (and a bad one at that) in the audience?

Whose side did you take on the David Lee Roth/Van Halen Split... Roth or Van Halen?

and here I've been trying to get the review for this album out of my brain and onto the computer screen. ha.
I'll Wait is underappreciated . . . what a spiffy song.
Nice review, as per usual . . .
