btspartan's Full Review: Goodbye Jumbo by World Party
This surprisingly low-profile album is a must-hear for anyone who loves modern music with a discernable 1960's flavor. Karl Wallinger (ex-Waterboy and Rocky Horror collaborator) shows his influences on this great rock album that abounds with audible ties to the Stones, Beatles, Dylan, Van Morrison, and so on...but all with a distinct 90's touch. The best in modern nostalgia.
The minor hit "Way Down Now" is typical fare for this disc, although not the best tune therein.
"God On My Side" and "Sweet Soul Dream" are other great examples of Wallinger's more-complex-than-it-sounds approach to rock n' roll, and my personal favorite "And I Fell Back Alone" is an absolutely beautiful ballad in the love gone wrong genre.
I'd describe this as a mellow disc, with lots of acoustic guitar and vocal harmonies, but there are some tunes to get you drumming on the steering wheel as well. Good all-purpose listening for any time of day.
Also recommended -- World Party's debut effort, Private Revolution.
