I was in high school when this came out, and it was the first Id heard of No Doubt, and I loved it. It wasnt until later albums that I thought they sold out even more so than this one. I cant even stand to listen to them on the radio anymore.
Great review, even though this albums still on my fond memories list.

No Doubt About Your Disdain (Reply to this comment)
by pduval69
Oh, you grouchy Gwen hater.
Sure, I'll agree that part of the appeal of this band is diva-gazing, but I think that can apply to just about any form of media. J. Lo makes awful music, toilet cleaner-like perfume and marginal movies, but people still flock to her because of gossip fodder and the ass-factor. Personally, I find some of No Doubt's music entertaining, and they have some sense of character. Also, while they're not a band with emotions that are fathoms-deep, they are at the very least real musicians who play their own instruments. I said it before, and I'll say it again. As long as pop music entertains the listener, it's fulfilled the required task.
Nicely written, although I suspect that your dislike of Gwen was the disapproving catalyst here.
Cheers,
Paul

Actually I think you'd be surprised. I've never had any dislike of Gwen Stefani at all. It just kind of came across that way in this piece. However, I do have a dislike of the "diva gazing" part of it all.
Their music? Well, I tried to like it nearly a decade ago. It still just doens't work for me. I wish it did. I do agree that they should be commended for playing their own instruments. I didn't say enough about that--but they are really musicians.
Thanks as always for the comment(s).

This attentive listener still loves this album many years later. And "The Climb" is his favorite song of theirs. So neener neener.

no doubt... (Reply to this comment)

I picked up this album myself back when it was first released, and Don't Speak I'd probably say is my favorite song on the album. I also liked Just a Girl a lot too. I don't have the album anymore (it got lost somewhere), but I haven't listened to No Doubt in a long time. I stopped watching MTV in the late 90s...and stopped listening to the radio too. So I'm kind of in the dark of what they've been up to lately, although I have heard one or two of the new No Doubt songs on TV a couple years back I think. It was off one of the latest albums. I thought it sounded good too, but I don't really buy music CDs anymore. Anyway...I'll stop rambling now.

I'm so glad (Reply to this comment)

I'm not the only person who hates this CD! I also hate Stefani, and think she's highly overrated (did I stress "highly" enough?!), as is this band.
I can wipe my brow now, there are at least two of us! :)
My best,
Marsha

Oh yes. Two of us on the 'not' side of No Doubt.

memories (Reply to this comment)

Yep. We must have a part song in college. It was "I love rock n roll" (Joan Jett) when I was in college. Fortunately, the rest of her stuff was really good too.

I have very sad memories of being in love with this album at one point. Worse, a few of my friends are into good ska bands such as the Specials and Reel Big Fish, and I can't imagine being more humiliated than saying "Ska? I love ska! No Doubt, right?"
Well, I suppose I could have said "Punk? I love punk! Sum41, right?"
Other than that random and useless tangent, good review. It made me want to burn this CD, in effigy and/or otherwise.

Oh my. Yeah. I feel your pain (not really though since I never was exactly a huge fan...)

Totally bias opinion! ...why bother? (Reply to this comment)
by licclelala
I found this article extremely bias to your personal taste, I have studied this album in depth as a personal university project and musically you couldn't ask for more, are you even listening to the same album? You seem so against Gwen Stefani it clouds your ability to make a constructive review of the music! Who labelled them solely as a ska band anyway? the subtle threads of new wave, rock steady, punk, even hard rock are woven throughout. I can appreciate it's not to your taste but in that case why write an article thats sole purpose is to influence buyers?
