jander01's Full Review: whitechocolatespaceegg [PA] by Liz Phair
No one sings like Liz Phair. At times raspy and low, at others squeaky and harsh, I adore her. Whenever I hear her voice I remember days of being an angst girl wanting to rule the world. With Exile and Whipsmart, Phair challenged the male-driven rock world to listen to a waifish girl with a serpentine tongue. So, I had to purchase whitechocolatesapecegg.
A fan for years, I grabbed this cd days before she played the TLA in Philadelphia. I was familiar with the sound but, was shocked that it lacked the lyrical edge of the past. Motherhood has subdued my rock princess. The days of "Flower" and "F*** and Run" are gone. I set my minor disappointment aside and realized that we are maturing together. Her words once spoke volumes to me and still do.
On this particular release, I am most impressed by "Polyester Bride" and "Love is Nothing" (Produced by Phair). Catchy and true. Her lyrics are her greatest achievement. Brad Wood and Scott Litt do a great job at bring this cd together.
Phair is no Litith babe. That's why I love her. I am so thankful that the goody-goody girl "rock" days are over. When all is said and done, Liz Phair will remain as an inspiration and a breathe of fresh air.
