lostpunk79's Full Review: Rock Art & The X-Ray Style by Joe Strummer & The M...
The recent months have been excited for music lovers everywhere. Whether your style ranges from roots rock or techno, all have been affected by Joe Stummer and the Clash. Well Joe is back!
His new band, Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros, just put out thier first full length album. Could this album match his days of old with "the only band that matters"? I was rather hesitant, but nonetheless, was sure to be at the Roxy to catch the him and his new band. They played a great show and included many Clash tracks in the mix. I shouldn't have to tell you about how surreal it felt for me to be up front in the pit watching Strummer preform White Riot, being as I was -2 years old when they released their self-titled debut.
After a drout of buying CDs for myself because of the holiday season I was at the local music shops a couple of days after xmas buying about 7 or 8 CDs. Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros was the first to enter my hand.
The music, though not what I had expected, was unbelievably good. I had alread heard "Tony Adams" prior to buying the album and it was nice to have taht be the first track so I could feel somewhat at home during the first spin. Well 50 minutes later I was in shock, what had I just expirienced?? I'll tell you, a ground breaking album. Styles range from reggae to folk to techno to country to punk. unreal. The mix of sounds is far from forced and I had a friend even mention to me,when i was asking about the album prior to buying it, that the "music just flowed". Agreed in full. "X-Ray Style", by far the best track on the album, is a slow reggae held together pefectly with a singe bongo, that is followed up but "Techno D-Day" is an up beat track with a large range of sounds, still the two songs work really well together.
I really suggest this work for anyone ready for a new sound. I personally can not stop listening to it and Im sure that anyone who gives it a chance will be stuck with it the way I am. But if your looking for the same old same old... go get your G'n'R album cause this album is too good for you.
