saw the band live just the other night here in London, and whilst they may well rip-off past greats, they do it well. yes, i'm the first to admit this is their weakest album to date, but I love the band regardless and will continue to.
respect your opinion greatly though !

Just read this review-I'm so glad I'm not alone in this belief. I have no problem with bands sounding similar to other ones-as pointed out, with all the music that's come out over the years, somebody's bound to sound like somebody sooner or later...but if I don't like a band, and there's another one who sounds very similar to them, chances are I probably won't like them much, either. And I've never gotten into 3 Doors Down-I know my sister in particular is into some of their music, and my dad likes a couple of their songs, but they've just never done anything for me. I find them quite boring. And it's nice to see that I'm not the only one who feels that way.
I do have an amusing memory, though, of our choir doing a pops concert back in...10th grade, I believe it was, and during the intermission, a school band came out and performed "Kryptonite", and a bunch of the kids backstage were singing along. Never been a big fan of the song, but I did think that was kinda funny. Meh.
Anywho, just wanted to drop a note and give a thumbs up on your review and description of this band (by the way, I never cared much for Creed, either :p).

Welcome to Wonderland says Alice. This is the place where nothing is really as it seems and the the Queen of Hearts rules all. You think White Stripes stinks? No it's actually wonderful. What you like Three Doors Down. Well I think it stinks. What say you peanut gallery? It stinks, Yes I thought so, Off with your Head!
Polyphonic Spree is indeed a good band with a unique sound. They kind of remind me of the BEATLEs. What do you think?

Save this generation! (Reply to this comment)
by nicodemus69
Kryptonite was on the air of the local rock station for a long and brutal time. They pushed it hard and I mean hard. Did I really need to hear this song over and over and over and over and over and over? You get the point. I almost thought it was the theme song to the station. I feel sorry for the younger generations that didnt get to live through the real talents of the 90s and could think this is a good band, heaven forbid great band. Standards of living are going downhill for this generation even in music. Save us from Clear Channel!

Ha! Glad to hear that they may be more interesting live (though, like you said it may be tainted by your alcohol intake). Anyway, yeah, I like what you said "harmless hillbillies." It says a lot.

I think these guys are pretty bad as well...someone got me the first album when it came out thinking it would be my thing, just because it was grunge-inspired altera-rock. Man, were they ever wrong. It's like the time I got a Lifehouse CD as a present. Eeeewwwwww.
Although, I will say that I don't hate these guys nearly as much as you do. They're not good, but they're fairly harmless, innocuous hillbillies just trying to play some rock. At least they're not regarded as important artists in the industry as some other no-talent idiots like say, oh, Gwen Stefani and her evil band of imperial monkeys.
Another thing...I actually saw these guys live. Not because I paid to see them specifically, but it was a big New Year's party in downtown Houston, and they were one of the many bands that played. And I will say that they were more interesting live than they are on CD. Of course, I may have thought that because I'd already seen like ten other bands and was probably wasted by that point given the amount of alcohol that was flowing at that giant party...yeah, that's probably it.
Nice shredding.

A damn-straight essay. Although, I 'm more inclined to fit them more under the genre of Jock Rock than any other. Kind of the like that really annoying local band that won't stop playing at the unniversity. C'mon, every town's got one.

I hate Creed, but Three Doors Down is kind of a guilty pleasure of mine. Fortunately, I don't own any of their albums, but I don't usually change the station if one of their schlocky songs comes on.

... music dork's corner ... but I love the single 'Kryptonite'! I don't know about the whole album/CD - haven't heard it all ... and I do hate how the single was over-played to death ... but the song itself ... I LOVE!!!!
Oh well ... I'll just slink off to the corner and pull my pants up Eurkle (sp?) style and put in my retainer and straighten my pocket protector ...
Happy 2004!

Ah yes...agreeing to disagree methinks. 3 Doors Down is not good IMHO. It's awful. Yucky. Blech.
Then again, I can't help but really and truly believe that there are so many things out there that are truly original. Polyphonic Spree...THAT my friends is originality. Jim White? Original as hell. But the fact is that so few people out there hear the truly original bands and acts...
It's a horrible, awful thing.
Still not budging on my opinion of this schlock though.

Enough Already. This is getting to be a bunch of B.S.. If Kryptonite sounds like Soundgarden then Soundgarden got it from Golden Earing's "Twilight Zone", who probably got it from somebody else.
Consciously or unconsciously these bands are most likely writing and playing from stuff they've heard, extrapolating from their base experiences.
If they sound a little like somebody that stopped recording ten years ago, so what?
I read once that there has been over ten million songs recorded in the last twenty years. Do you think it's possible that there might be some overlapping.
I just got a new album on which a few songs sound so much like Bon Jovi that I fooled by teenage, Bon Jovi loving daughter. So what? We've got to look at the glass as half full. We can always appreciate good Bon Jovi.
By the way, I thought The better Life was one of the best American recordings in the last five years.

I like diatribes. Of course they can't be complete rants...
Shrek. Tee-hee. The first thing I thought of when I saw the singer was that he looked like a troll. I just couldn't help adding those two cents. Bad me, I know.
In any case, I *would* write about Fuel but as I've never heard an album in it's entirety from the band it's not all that possible. But maybe if I get my paws on one some day I'll do so...
Thanks for the comment, Drew.

Speaking of derivative bands, could you rip apart Fuel next? I really liked their first CD but since then I have very disappointed by their repetition of the same themes and their overblown histrionics.
It's funny you should write this now. I just re-visited my review of this record which was positive 3 years ago, but I probably haven't listened to it in more than a year, maybe two. You hear it enough on the radio to never have to listen to it.
If there was a diatribe category here on Eps, you could file this review there. It's not nice to call someone troll-like, no matter how much they resemble Shrek.

3DD are so terrible they make me feel betrayed as a music listener. Judging from their latest album's singles, they've progressed none. I gave this album one star as well, and I know that they aren't exactly 100% Epinions-approved.... so how's the cumulative rating 4 stars? Oh well. Good review-- a band ripped apart by a talented ripper.
Peace,

Ah yes. The Suede debut. Very good. But I do like Dog Man Star (the second album) even better. Heroine (aka Heroin) is an AMAZING track :) Enjoy Suede...you'll enter my Brit pop arena soon enough...

When I first heard of "Kryptonite", I thought it was Soundgarden or some new Chris Cornell single. Boy, was I fooled. It really irked me as a fan of 90s rock. And they still suck. Which is why I just got the debut album by Suede. It rocks.

I'd have to agree here...I don't love Three Doors Down, but I think some of their singles are pretty good. At any rate, there's no such thing as an original artist anymore, anyway.
Different strokes for different folks, I guess...

I thought Better Life was good and White Stripes sucked but you're right about most songs sounding alike.
Then again most cars look like Tauruses these days too and the "look at me" Hummers look like baby Armored trucks.
Guess I'll concentrate on Import music where my opinion is usually the only opinion.

SPAWN OF SATAN.

I enjoyed the ripping apart and credit my owning of this album to a fellow Epinionater who will remain nameless (he said he wanted me to rip it apart)...
