dumptruck's Full Review: Telicatessen by Rob Sonic
Telicatessen is here. Though the question lingers.... what the frick is a Telicatessen?! I do not know. With that out of the way, let's talk about this album. It's Rob Sonic's solo album, and it's not for the ones who listen to the radio, or like to bounce. Rob Sonic is not like that. However, he does have SOME degree of bounce-ness going on (Death Vendor for example).
This album is definitely NOT for everyone. Record execs will discard this album and label it as non marketable. Girls can't dance to it; and guys (or thugs for instance) can't smoke or "ride" to it. For the rest of us (who are an abrupt "about face" to the cliche' riddled and infested music of today), it's a breath of fresh air; sometimes.
Rob is a rare breed. Him on Def Jux is a nice fit. El-P's vision and Rob's spacey synthwork (synth is short for synthesizer, you idiots) gives you some trippy music. And his lyrics are rare, too. I recommend you fully listen to his songs if you're going to piece it all together.
Rob Sonic's rhyme scheme is something that can't be classified. It goes beyond the borders and the limitations of a simple adjective. It becomes a matter of rewinding the CD trying to catch what he said. Be prepared, you'll encounter that alot.
One complaint though; it's too short. I was expecting a longer album.
I like it, but it should've been longer. Basically, this is an album that will get heavy rotation on MY CD player.
Def Jux does it again. Duh!
Disclaimer: I get flack for the way I do my reviews. I'll get messages like "do this and do that." I'm so sorry I couldn't put my journalism degree from Harvard to good use.
