Pros: 8 quality songs, including the "current" signature song, "Takin' Care of Business."
Cons: Only 8 songs... when they're this good you want more!
The Bottom Line: THEDefining Album for one of the 70's most popular Rock Bands! Proves They Were Capable of "Takin' Care Of Business"... even back then!
PMellEagle's Full Review: Bachman-Turner Overdrive II by Bachman-Turner Over...
Have you ever played a record so much that you literally wore thru the vinyl? Me neither, but if it were possible, this album might have been the one for it to happen to!
Like many teenagers, I bought some albums because of who the artist was and others because I liked a song or two. I purchased Bachman-Turner Overdrive II because I loved the song "Takin' Care of Business." This song has kind of become their signature song because of the Office Depot ads; but it was not always so!
Back in their prime, they were known as much for songs like "You Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet" and "Let It Ride" (which is included on BTO II as well.) Let me tell you a little about BTO II.
There is a variety of musical styles, each definately rock but unique in its own right. The hits, "Takin' Care of Business" and "Let It Ride" were great songs, but so are the "B" sides and the filler stuff. This was, for me, one of those rare albums with all 8 cuts being worthy of repeated listening.
Normally I can point to a favorite or two, but honestly... I can't do it here. "Blown", "Tramp", "Give it Time", and "I Don't Have to Hide" rank right up with the quality of the hit singles; "Stonegates" and "Welcome Home" barely below that quality... probably better stuff there than a lot of artists release as their singles!
Bachman-Turner Overdrive had recorded under the name "Brave Belt" in Canada before scoring big in the U.S. with the name we know them by. The band featured three lead vocalists, C. F. Turner, Randy Bachman, and Tim Bachman. Turner was the bass player while the Turner's took turns at lead guitar. Rob Bachman handled drums & percussion.
I've had a couple of other BTO albums, but never heard one that quite captured the same magic. Every band that has any success has one "ultimate" album; the Raspberries had "Starting Over", Fleetwood Mac had "Rumors", the Eagles had "Hotel California"... for BTO THE defining album was "Bachman-Turner Overdrive II".
