MzRizz's Full Review: John Brannen by John Brannen
I can't understand why this young man is not the superstar he should be. And many people might say "who is John Brannen?" If you, too, are unsure who he is, let me introduce you.
The first time I saw him was his debut into the country music scene in 94, right when Shania Twain and Toby Keith were primed for stardom. He was introduced on Country Music Television.
He did a hosting job on VH1 maybe in 93/94, back in the days when they experimented with adding country music to the lineup. I have him on a videotape where he sang on the old "Crook & Chase" - a live country show.
But when I ran across this CD a few years ago, I was adamant on searching for mention of him. I scoured the net for him hoping to buy his music.
John Brannen is soulfully unique. He writes his music with collaborators and sings with a southern drawl and deep twang. To me, he is a cross between Dwight Yoakam and Steve Earle. The music is danceable and something to sing along with. He might be considered southern country rock.
This entire CD is outstanding and it includes 10 songs. I love to hear his twang when he sings "Love's Not Made of Steel" "Strangers An Hour Ago", "Moonlight & Magnolias" and the ballad "As Far As My Eyes Can See" plus more. I like every song..... every song!
Although his style is like Dwight Yoakam or Steve Earle, no one sounds like John Brannen. Unlike the honky tonker Yoakam is, or the hard-livin' country rocker that Steve Earle is, the lyrics on this CD are comprised of... what else is there, but love and relationships.
