I first saw Fandango while I was still in high school. It was on cable for the first time on HBO and I decided, on a whim, to sit through it. On that fateful night Fandango became one of my all time favorite movies.
I have to agree with others' opinions about the movie. It's not the first, the last or the best to explore this particular genre, but it is definitely one of the most touching and entertaining. The musical score is brilliant, ranging from Steppenwolf to Pat Metheny. This is one CD that I would have bought in a heartbeat.
The movie goes from silly to funny to touching effortlessly. From the mooning scene at the beginning to the realization at the cemetery that they are facing imminent death in Vietnam, the movie manages to cover the whole spectrum. Excellent acting from Kevin Costner and Judd Nelson, as well as the others, make this a very entertaining movie.
I enjoy it every bit as much now as when I first saw it 14 years ago, and the countless times in-between. The vast, desolate desert landscape as seen from their train riding adventure to their trek up to dig up "Dom" is pure art.
