If you have yet to see this movie, drop everything that you are doing, run out and go see it. This, in my opinion, is John Hughes' masterpiece (sorry Breakfast Club fans).
Our hero, the most popular senior in his high school (Ferris, played by Matthew Broderick), is setting a record for ditching school. On a lovely spring day, he decides to skip again. He gets his always ill friend Cameron (played by Alan Ruck) and his girlfriend (who he actually gets out of school through a funny prank) out of school also. The trio spend the day going all around Chicago, checking out the Sears Tower, taking in a ball game, dining at a fancy restaurant. Of course there are a couple of close calls with his folks. The principal at Ferris' school, played by Jeffrey Jones, is out to get Ferris and make an example of him. His sister, played by Jen Gray, is also out to get Ferris caught. She is jealous because everything always works out for her brother and she just isn't as popular as Ferris.
If you like John Hughes movies (Uncle Buck, Pretty in Pink, Dutch, among others), you will love this. Broderick delivers a classic performance- he is hilarious throughout the film. He plays a high school senior beautifully. He is care-free and fun-loving. Alan Ruck is great as his best friend. Ruck's character actually has more depth to him than Broderick's, as he is actually dealing with a father who cares more for his sports cars than his son. Gray does a great job as the sister- you hate her for trying to stop Ferris' fun. There is a great scene where she picked up by the cops. The principal is also a riot. Throughout the movie, he is chased by a dog, loses his wallet, gets soda spit in his face, gets beat-up, and generally bumbles around. And then there are his parents who think Ferris can do no wrong and is sick as a dog.
For those who love Chicago, you'll love all of the scenery. Hughes is from Chicago and shoots just about all of his movies there. I can't think of any bad scenes in this film.
This is a must see for all. Kids, parents, etc.
