Until a few years ago, I had never seen any of the Godfather films, although many of my friends urged me to. I had no idea what I was missing. I am now a very big Godfather fan, of all three films. I love watching three generations of the Corleone family from 1901 in Sicily to the late 20th century in New York City. The genius of Coppola, Puzo, Brando, Pacino and others really amazes me, especially the way they are all combined in this film.
The Godfather is the portion of the Corleone saga that takes place from late 1945 to the mid 1950s. The way the setting is recreated is just another thing that adds to the films beauty. Everything is authentic from cars to Christmas cards. The research is fabulous, both into mafia life and the setting of the story.
The plot is the king of multi-dimensional plots. There are so many subplots and nuances that add to the greatness. Not until the very end to you see how everything come together so beautifully. The way they adapted Puzo's novel into a movie is spectacular. They did it by editing some parts, taking out a lot of boring stuff, and adding in a tiny little bit - just the right amount. Some of it they reserved for Part II, another excellent film.
The acting and direction is superb. Marlon Brando was TOO good in his role as Vito, the Godfather (he won the Academy Award for Best Actor) and Francis Ford Coppola was the perfect director, despite the fact that he was scared he was going to be fired during the entire making of the movie (he won the Academy Award for Best Director I believe). Al Pacino was also amazing, and Diane Keaton, Robert Duvall, and Talia Shire were all fabulous as well. I have no idea how a rather low budget film acquired such talent!
If you love this movie, and most people have for 28 years now, you'll LOVE Part II, and perhaps Part III. People think that Sofia Coppola spoilt Part III. I don't think so, but the best way is to know what YOU think is to see for yourself. You'll also enjoy Scarface, a great movie with Al Pacino.
Although it may seem that only people obsessed with the mafia would like this, that is not the case. Anyone who enjoys great films will love this one. It has been rated the best film every by many rating services. I totally agree with this, although I haven't seen every movie ever made.
