Jaws has got to be one of my favorite movies. It's really hard to find a movie of this caliber anymore. What can be more scary than the thought of being consumed alive by an animal with, as Quint says, "lifeless eyes".
But it's not the suspense aspect of this movie that makes me like it so much. It's the character development. During the movie, you associate with Chief Brody, Hooper and Quint. You feel as though you're on the Orca with them facing the same dangers. The scene that really shines is Quint's narration of the tragic events surrounding the sinking of the USS Indianapolis. If you've seen the movie, you know what I'm talking about. If not, you're depriving yourself of an incredible cinematic sequence.
Recently, my wife and I went on vacation for Florida and spent a day at Discovery Cove. They have an artificial reef where you can snorkel. The reef is cleverly designed with barracuda and shark areas. The animals are behind a wall of glass, but underwater you can't see the glass. As we swam up to the windows to take some pictures, a very small (a few feet, nothings compared to the twenty (or twenty five) footer in the movie!) reef shark swam past me. My heart began thumping and in my head I could hear the classic Jaws theme!
Jaws isn't just a movie, it's an experience that stays with you your entire life!
