Most good movies can be watched twice, maybe even three or four times, without the viewer getting bored. A select few stand up to unlimited viewings, and for me, Murder By Death tops that short list. I just never get tired of watching it. But why?
I could say it's because of the flawless Neil Simon script, written to skewer the characters, conventions and cliches of formulaic mystery novels. Littered with puns, double entendres and one-liners, it's a comedic masterpiece, a celebration of silly humor.
Or it could be the amazing cast, which features a host of top talent: Peter Sellers, David Niven, Maggie Smith, Peter Falk, James Coco, Elsa Lanchester, Alec Guinness, James Cromwell, Eileen Brennan, Nancy Walker and, of all people, Truman Capote! A movie could never go wrong with this group of people to bring the script to life. Every joke is perfectly timed and every line hits just the right note thanks to these consummate performers.
Maybe it's just because I first saw this movie when I was about 12 and it made an indelible impression on my psyche. I don't know. I just know that I laugh just as hard at this movie now as I did then. And now that I've been sitting here thinking and writing about it, I'm going to have to watch it again soon...
