Magick1's Full Review: Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer
This was a movie originally produced for television back in 1964. It is based upon a story written by Robert May. Johnny Marks wrote the song and lyrics for what is now probably one of the best know Christmas songs of all time Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer.

Larry Romer directed this movie with an associate director named Kizo Nagashima. Nagashima also worked on Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town, another movie that I truly enjoy! Larry Roemer, worked on the 1964 version of Return to Oz. Burl Ives, one of the “main characters in Rudolph’s movie, worked on many projects in his time. He worked for many years on movies like Cat on a Hot Tin Toof and East of Eden. He also has “voicing” credit on Pinocchio’s movie as Gepetto. (Just a little, somewhat useless trivia for those who enjoy it!)
On to the show
Burl Ives, narrates the Rudolph story. He plays Sam, the talking snowman. For those who do not know about his history, was a very, very active actor. He portrayed characters in films and did voices for many a cartoon character. He played roles in “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof”, “East of Eden”, and “Roots”. He did voices on “Rudolph”, narrating and singing and “Pinocchio” as Gepetto.
I think the reason that I enjoy this movie so much, as why I consider it my most favorite Christmas movie of all time, is due to the fact that this movie lets you feel good.
At first, we find proud new parents, Mr. and Mrs. Donner. They are so excited to have a new little boy reindeer! Santa Claus stops by to see the bundle of joy too! Well, they soon find out Rudolph is unique! What with his nose so bright…oops, that song is still coming to mind! LOL
His nose is bright red, and Santa says that he hopes it goes away, otherwise Rudolph will never be able to lead his sleigh to deliver the toys with him on Christmas Eve.
Now, here’s that part of the story that most everyone can relate to. The nose creates a problem for Rudolph, and so his dad Donner covers up Rudolph’s nose with some dark clay. This way, no one will know Rudolph is different. (It’s hard to watch because even his father is depressed with how he looks.) The disappointment kicks in, and we begin to see the trend. Santa says he won’t be able to lead a sleigh if he looks this way and Rudolph’s father tries covering up that “unique” nose. What’s next?
The flying coach, Coach Comet, is very impressed with Rudolph’s flying abilities. (Remember, he found out little Clarise thought he was cute, and he was walking on clouds!)
Well, Rudolph and another buck started “wrestling” bumping their tiny antlers in the reindeer games, and Donner’s substitute nose that he created for Rudolph fell off. Suddenly, Rudolph was an outcast and no one could play with him any longer. Well, think of all of the hardships we faced as kids, and the hardships that our kids face today? I remember that kids called me names all of the time because I wore glasses. (Oh, what a cruel world we live in.)
Well, my reason for loving this movie is coming up. Rudolph of course leaves with Hermey, the elf that wants to be a dentist. (Obviously, that is not normal for an elf, so Hermey was being made fun of too, and they both decide to scoot out of Christmas Town!)
They run across Yukon Cornelius, and begin to travel along with him. The find a little island with misfit toys. These little toys are ones that no one wants because they are different. (But, the saddest part of the movie is when King Moonracer won’t allow Hermey, Yukon Cornelius, and Rudolph to stay on the island! They just don’t fit in. The island is for misfit toys! Instead, they are sent on a mission to help make the misfit toys’ Christmas…talk Santa Claus into taking the misfit toys with him on his Christmas Eve journey. Find the misfits a home so they won’t be misfits any more!
What about poor Rudolph? He still a misfit, everyone still makes fun of him because of his nose. I’m sure we all know the ending! Even though Rudolph is different, he is still very important, and finally everyone sees how important he really is.
What a terrific message to send to our little ones. Even though someone might be different from you, it’s not polite to make fun of others, no matter what!
This movie helps serve as a reminder that everyone and everything is important. We all need to remember this! Be kind to others, and love one another. We just never know how they might help us in the future!
