Re: Stephen: (Reply to this comment)
by Stephen_Murray, in Movies
A bit rushed, though packing a lot in, and brutal, but not, I think, brutally cut.
Our president has very limited capacity for paying attention to the world, and I think that Iran is in his gun-sight. The current Sandinista government is more gradualist than the previous one, though still making literacy and universal health care its top priorities. The country is very poor, never really recovering from the 1972 earthquake (and the appropriation of international relief by Somoza & Co. being so brazen that even the US ceased to support him).

My memory of this movie is that of a piece so brutally cut as to resemble butchery. Glad you find this version so coherent. Perhaps, good ole Criterion has restored it.
Rest full of anxiety, Stephen, for unless I miss my guess, prior his leave of office, Our President will find some way of expanding the Columbian "war on drugs" into Ecuador and Venezuela, given the apparent provocations Hugo Chavez is giving him.
Neocon Central Casting will be looking for another William Walker.
Fine review. (You must write them in your sleep.}
