Mike,
Really well-written review....you hit on a lot of good points and show a solid reviewing style. So I can't really argue, even if I thought the movie was pretty good. Keep it up!

Great review, as always.
One thing you said struck me as the reason why you might have liked it the first time around.
<<New Jack City was one of the first (italics mine) films to attempt to cash in on the burgeoning popularity of hip-hop culture.>>
Since the far superior King of New York and Deep Cover hadn't come out yet, maybe it was the fact that this was the first of its kind.
I will say, though, the "first of their kind" films can suck, sometimes. Take Philadelphia - Hollywood still hasn't been able to write a decent gay lead role.
Anyway, let me get off this soapbox. Dug the review, Mike.
Cheers,
Jeremiah

I wonder-- and I guess you said this-- if you reviewed this film not only as compared to what you'd seen at the time, but also what was in existence at the time it was made, maybe it does have some value?
The early 90's are still too close in time for us to have real perspective and to know what really will date the 90's or not-- having grown up in the 70's and 80's I know that while I was living it there was a lot of stuff that I thought was awful, or not noteworthy, which is now considered "retro" and "cool"... who knew?
I dunno, just ruminating, not saying much, really...

Steve,
Glad you enjoyed the review--I hope you enjoy the others as well.
Dan,
Yeah, finally made it to 20k--I should pass 40k in total hits sometime this week as well. Odd to think that I've gotten that many hits--I never expected it when I started.
Thanks guys,
Mike B.

Pearl,
Actually, the CMB is the one saving grace for this film--Wesley Snipes and Allen Payne are easily the best parts of the movie.
I really used to love New Jack City, but watching it the other night, it just seemed really dated...and, well, not very good as a whole. I was sad to see that it didn't hold up for me.
At any rate, thanks for reading, rating, and commenting--even if you don't agree with me.
