Plot Details: This opinion reveals major details about the movie's plot.
The Mask is a great movie. It has everything. It has romance, comedy and action. This movie is for just about anybody.
Stanley Ipkiss (Jim Carey) is the tongue-tied Mr. Nice Guy. He works in the bank where his boss is a crook. His landlady is a mean witch. His friend, Charlie (Richard Jeni) takes him out to a club. Stanley is thrown out of the club, and with his new "loner" car, he heads home. In midway, the car breaks down. He takes a moment to relax, while at the lake, he sees a man that drowned. He runs down to the lake, and sees that it is not a man, it's a mask. He goes home with that mask. His disk-loving, dog, Milo, brings Stanley a Frisbee, and wants Stanley to throw, and so he does. Milo starts licking the mask. Stanley wants to put it on, because he thinks that his luck can't get any worse. He puts on the mask, and he transforms into "the mask". Now he has the power to become a "Super-hero", so that's exactly what he does. He becomes an evil super-hero. He went to every place that he needed revenge at. He went to the mechanics that gave him the "loner", and he went to the guys that threw him out of the club. Of course before going to the club, he went to the bank just to do a quick robbery. There was someone else wanting to make a robbery: Dorian Tyrel (Peter Greene). The mask beat them to it, and now Dorian wants revenge.
As the new weird-looking mask, he easily gets into the club. In there, he sees Tina Carlyle (Cameron Diaz). He makes howling sounds, he bangs his head on the table, just like in all the cartoons he has seen. He couldn't take it anymore, and he just has to dance with Tina. So he ran down, gave the drummer a totally new outfit, and he started dancing with Tina. He loved it. Dorian was also at the club. When he saw The Mask, his blood started boiling. He went over to the stage and started shooting. The crowd ran. Tina was Dorian's girlfriend, so of course he was jealous. However the mask has seen too many cartoons, and he dodged every bullet that Dorian and his men shot at him. The Mask easily escaped. That's when the idiotic, police chief arrives, Lieutenant Kellaway (Peter Riegert) and he stops Dorian's shooting.
The next morning, Stanley wakes up, and thinks that last night was all a dream. He goes to work, late as usual, and his boss yells at him again, but this time, Stanley is suspiciously confident, and blows off his boss.
While Stanley is at work, Dorian and his gangsters are giving away $50 000 to whoever finds the mask, and brings him to Dorian. A red-haired lady, named Peggy Brandt (Amy Yasbeck) undertakes the challenge.
Peggy published a letter that Stanley sent her. She comes to Stanley and talks to him; gets to know him a little better. And she seems to like him.
That night, Stanley wears his mask again, and becomes "The Mask". He had a date with Tina, and Tina wanted to see that special guy she danced with last night. Stanley organized the date for her. Stanley goes behind a bush, and puts on the mask. Seeing that Tina wanted to see him again, he becomes just a maniac. Lt. Kellaway waits behind another bush to see if Stanley really is the mask. The results were positive. Kellaway ran out of the bush, and tried to arrest Stanley, when Stanley ran away, just like he did the other night at the club.
When the mask came out of the park, he saw the whole police force pointing guns at him. For a minute, he was terrified, but then he remembered his powers. With his cartoon super powers, he embarrassed the entire police force by making them dance publicly on the streets.
He ran away to a gutter, took off the mask, just as Peggy appears out of nowhere, in her car, and tells Stanley to jump in. They drive off, to a factory. That's where she plans to keep him until Dorian arrives, and gives her the money. Twenty minutes late, Dorian arrives. In the factory, Dorian puts on the mask, and becomes an evil creature, far worse than Stanley.
The city of Chicago is in terror. Gangsters are running the city. While Dorian is driving, Milo follows his car. Dorian drops Stanley off at the police, with a rubber mask in his pocket. The police have all the evidence they need, so they put him away, to jail.
Milo is depressed and he now lives just outside of jail. Tina came to visit Stanley, and tell him Dorian's evil plan. Now, Stanley is desperate to get out of jail. His smart dog, Milo gets the keys from the officer (while the officer is asleep) and gives the keys to Stanley. Stanley is now free.
Stanley goes to the club. There, he sees Dorian as "the mask". Dorian tied Tina to some wood, and attached explosives to her feet. Tina has one last wish: A kiss from the Dorian she used to love not the mask. Dorian takes off the mask, while they kiss, Tina kicks the mask out of his hand, and Milo catches the mask. Milo sticks his face into the mask, and now is a whole new breed of dog. He saves the day; Stanley takes the mask off Milo, and puts it on himself.
With his renewed powers, he defeats Dorian, saves Tina, and swallows the bomb (the bomb did explode, but he used his powers to stay safe). At the end, the clueless police come to arrest Dorian and his men.
Stanley goes with Tina and Charlie, to throw away the mask, so that it will never be found again. And like every movie's ending, they kiss. All's well that ends well.
I would recommend this movie to kids over 10 years old. There's a bit too much violence.
The Mask is a great movie. It is a great way to spend time. I highly recommend this movie.
