Waterworld is another one of those movies which is totally unique as a film, but lacks much as stories go. There were many things to see and to think about, but not as many of the usually required elements of a film.
What I believe is the trouble with Waterworld is that it tried to pass itself off as the wrong kind of movie. If there was less action, we could have easily classified it as a science-fiction thriller, and thus the movie would have had all the fans that come with that classification. This also goes for the reverse. However, as it is, people were confused (as people often are).
No one knew quite what Waterworld was, but that didn't stop it from being a good movie. Everything held up well, justifying the occasional bending of the rules of movies, until the end. At this point, there was nothing left to introduce, so the movie became almost purely action. Everything was then very formulaic. All the loose ends were tied up, sure, but it was all too easy.
I kept saying to myself, "How can he lose? He's hyper-evolved." The suspense ends there.
