Is it legal to be this witty? My dinner with Andre Dolls? How I love thee Christopher Guest! By far the favorite movie in my family, Waiting for Guffman is one of those movies you either "get" or you well, "don't get", as I have come to find out.
I will try to give my best pseudo-critique from what I consider to be one of the best comedies to date:
I suppose Blaine, Missouri could be anytown USA, although the inhabitants are some what like shoe-ins from Liquid Sky (the performance artists in general). The film is a documentary style, and good at that, since the camera person keeps their mouth very quiet, which I tend to like. The characters are so very likeable: Parker Posey (forgive me for forgetting her character name), the naive, gum-smackin "DQ" (attention west coasters, thats slang for Dairy Queen, of Softee fame) employee, and part time dreamer; Eugene Levy as Dr. Pearl, the yiddish dentist, also part-time dreamer, and a big loveable clown; Ron and Sheila who run the local travel agency, but have never left the state, and are very talented and serious actors! (note:Ron also had an important surgery-be sure to listen for details during the dinner scene); And finally Corky St.Clair, the brilliant, (Off-Off) Broadway director! He knows a hit when he see it! And his "Red White and Blaine" is sure to produce a hit. Right? Well, as long as New York Producer Mort Guffman see's the gangs play, based on the history of Blaine, they will all be stars. But will Mort Make it to Blaine? The 5 rehearse religiously and form a close bond, and are charmed by Corky's talent and dedication! And he even has time to go dress shopping for his "wife"!
When showtime arrives for "Red White and Blaine", the actors are in great form. The "Stool Song" (Foot stool silly, not the other kind), is emphasized by Sheila's very loud voice, and Corky was captivating in "A Penny for your thoughts". The residents of Blaine were blown away by the performance. I was a wreck, having gone through a whole box of kleenex, myself. Moving performance.
SO! Was Guffman waiting for them? Did he get his invitation? Do they make it to Broadway? Will Ron and Sheila ever leave Blaine? Oh, don't you wish you knew? Watch the movie, with a loved one, and pay close attention to Corkys original dance number, the scene with the overalls. Its a riot! Don't Cheat yourself and miss this! You will thank yourself later.
Corky St. Clair a flamboyant and desperate Broadway wannabe, is determined to get back to the bright lights of Broadway, and he things he was the tick...More at HotMovieSale.com
