The Bottom Line: this film is bad, it's terrible, it sucks, it's just one of the worst films ever made. I give it 0 stars, or I would if Epinions would let me.
carl_lazarevic's Full Review: Mortal Kombat - Annihilation
Plot Details: This opinion reveals major details about the movie's plot.
I was one of those people you hear about that actually managed to enjoy the first Mortal Kombat movie, but this sequel is an absolute mess. Boring, dumber than a blonde waitress in a hair salon, (No offense to blondes, waitresses or hair salon frequenters) and about as much fun as watching someone else playing a game of Snakes And Ladders.
The story opens exactly where the last film left off, with Shao Kahn so angry about his loss at the tournament that he decides to invade anyway. After that the story develops along a series of twists involving Shao Kahn's brotherhood with Rayden. Their father being an elder god who wants to see Earth destroyed for no reason beyond he's the big bad guy who destroys stuff.
However despite the stylish direction of the first film, this sequel features the choppiest fight scenes, even worse choreographed than the originals, and being devoid of anything resembling either atmosphere or fun.
Acting wise the film is a crime against mankind, it's terrible and second only to Battlefield Earth in this regard. The first person you meet is Shao Kahn, the Lord of all evil, and that big guy with the scary gravely voice from the end of the first film. Except he's suddenly turned into some bald bloke who spends the entire film whining. He looks like wrestling superstar Kurt Angle, so if you could believe him as a planet destroying monster, then go ahead and watch this trash. Sandra Hess plays Sonia this time around, and she wouldn't know the meaning of the word emotion if it slapped her. Lynn Williams plays her partner Jax, and I have to admit that he irritated me no end with his cloying tough guy act. The new Rayden is worst though, James Remar looks, sounds and is an idiot in this film, he doesn't have the charisma of Lambert, and couldn't hold his own playing a god if he tried, which he has.
There are many more terrible actors in this film, in fact not a single good one, but this is a Lean-N-Mean review that is spending all of it's words on acting, so I'll conclude this section by reminding you that the acting is as bad as Battlefield Earth.
Still, the biggest problem with the film is that it tries to cam too many of the games plots into one film. The first film at least knew which were the important characters, and which ones could be ignored but this film tries to tell a story for every uninteresting character, even the robot assassin who gets killed nearly straight away.
Effects wise the film was also a let down. Characters would fight with completely CGI characters and they'd look bad. I put for effects, "Smell the 90's technology" but this film was made in the 90's and it was substandard even then. The final battle where hero and villain turn into dragons looked worse than the work of Harryhousen, way back in the 50's.
Who am I kidding, this film is bad, it's terrible, it sucks, it's just one of the worst films ever made. I give it 0 stars, or I would if Epinions would let me.
This has been my entry into the Lean-N-Mean write-off.
