Titanic was one of those movies I was afraid to see simply because of all the hype surrounding the release and the unprecedented media coverage even before the movie was released. I did decide to see the movie in the theater in order to experience the movie as it was intended to be viewed.
I was not disappointed by the special effects and the great length that director James Cameron went to in order to create the most detailed reenactment of this horrific tragedy. The money was well spent in this case, and I can name many pictures over the past ten years that have no right to make that claim.
Though the story in general is about the maiden voyage of Titanic, the love story between Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio seemed to steal the show in most viewers opinions. I wondered as I watched the movie if it was truly necessary to create fictional characters to add to the already unspeakable loss and tragedy which occurred that cold night at sea. Obviously, the loss of 1500 people was not a large enough story to tell. Perhaps the writers felt that they needed a young couple in love in order to make this film relevant for a younger audience.
The most disturbing part of my Titanic experience came after I left the theater. People insisted on asking over and over again if I enjoyed the movie. My answer was always the same. How could I enjoy a movie based on a true story of 1500 tragic deaths at sea. I found the movie touching, riveting at times, historically accurate, and definitely entertaining; however, I can not in good conscience claim to have loved watching this movie. It disturbed me and angered me and I believe when we look past the little love story, that is exactly the reaction we as the audience were expected to have.
See this movie but understand that while you will be able to appreciate the talent that it took to produce this extraordinary picture, you may not be able to get over the fact that it is a true event that was experienced by many people who survived and are living today. It's just too easy to get caught up in the hype of a super motion picture and forget that it is a tragic disaster which could have been avoided that took the lives of mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, and children.
