One hour and fifty six minutes that will exercise
your emotions to their extreme limits. This movie
is a biographical compression of experiences of Dr.
Patch Adams. Every one of the topics depicted on
the movie happened to Patch Adams during his own
life experiences. However, poetic license was
enacted in order to compress the events making Patch
Adams a maximum level entertainment production.
Academy award winner, Robin Williams, plays a man
who discovers that his role in life is to become a healer.
He finds that there is a major benefit to approaching
the patient with a less technical bedside manor and
reaches them using his wit and keen sense of humor.
The movie shows Patch going though medical school
reaching out to the patients while dealing with the
obstacle of having a closed minded instructor that
refuses to relax his physician's " Holier than Thou "
attitude. The instructor feels that physicians should
display this attitude in order to maintain a higher level
of medical professionalism.
There are moments in this movie that will make you cry,
more that will make you laugh. As you watch the movie
you will no doubt notice, as did I, the young patients
in the movie that had no hair. Pretty young ladies that you
wonder why they would allow their hair to be cut for the
chance to be in a movie. These were actual ‘Make A Wish'
patients and make the movie all that more touching.
I believe you will certainly enjoy this movie and might
wish to add it to your DVD or VHS media library.

How Patch Adams Has Affected the Medical Community
==========================================
I have been in the medical profession for longer than I wish
to admit, and have shared Dr. Patch Adams views on
reaching my patients through the use of laughter. It took the
release of the movie Patch Adams to motivate my hospital
to initiate a ‘Be a Clown Program', where many of the
hospital's staff actually attend Clown Class to learn how to
become a clown. They don clown make-up and wigs and
wear false noses and colorful outfits in an attempt to make
the patient's hospital stay a little more pleasant. It never
ceases to amaze me how much one gains by spreading a
little happiness.
Dr. Patch Adams has built a hospital where medicine is
practiced with the belief that laughter is the best medicine.
See the real Patch Adams on the DVD and VHS releases
