Re: Bill Paxton is.... (Reply to this comment)

Alex,
...one of the best, yet seriously underrated, actors in show biz.
Absolutely - and his "everyman" style is perfect for this film.
Now, I must be honest. I haven't seen A Simple Plan yet, but hey, if Paxton's in it, it's probably worth a look. After all, I loved his performances as Pvt. Hudson in Aliens, Fred Haise in Apollo 13, the guy looking for the Heart of the Ocean in Titanic, and even that little bit part in The Terminator.
Oh, and yeah, your review whetted my appetite to see this one, as well.
A Simple Plan is good - definitely worth a watch. And if you like Paxton, you really should check out "Frailty" (I reviewed it somewhere along the line) - it's one of my all time favorite thrillers and he both directed and has a major role. If you have any interest in thrillers, check it out, I think it'll knock your socks off!

C,
How did I miss this comment? How rude of me.
The chocolate chip cookie is taking it over the top. Just keep it simple. :)

The elixir, btw, is a combination of catnip, vodka and chocolate chip cookie. Good stuff....;)

C,
... I had forgotten I saw this movie until I read your review, and then it all came flooding back into my poor noggin'. That's some magic elixir you keep brewing.
I really like this movie - it's one I watch when I catch it on cable and I'm always fascinated by the characters.

There's a "Of Mice and Men" quality between Paxton and Billy Bob that really makes this movie click. I know the movie was altered from the book and I think it makes Paxton's character a somewhat more compassionate figure than his book counterpart. But I agree, this was definitely a great movie to watch.
I love Paxton/Thornton - their chemistry is terrific and the relationship on screen s so complicated. That is such a hard thing to pull off in 2 hours. I like Fonda as well. Her transformation is really impressive.
I can see changing Paxton's character if he was less conflicted/less compassionate in the book. It would be so much harder to "feel his pain" if we didn't feel like he was deep down a good guy. Now that we have snow and it's cold as all get out, I want to rent this again!

Margaret,
You're right. And I should have taken care of this when I first saw it. I will go and put a warning on the review so that what happened to you does not happen to others. Sorry about that - I hope you'll still be able to see and enjoy the film.

The very first comment I read after reading Sue's excellent (as usual) and intriguing review, gives the whole frigging thing away. I can't imagine why you would do such a thing, especially on someone else's review.
There's a reason that EP's movie reviews require the writer to indicate how much of the plot will be given away, and I thought an an Advisor would be mindful of those alerts. I really didn't want to know any of the details you spilled here.
Thanks a whole bunch.

Re: Oh jeez (Reply to this comment)

Dis,
What does it say about an actor when all his best performances are in mentally whacked-out or "slow" roles?
Hmm. Good point. Perhaps that he is either whacked out or slow. Or both. Or just weird as hell - which seems the most likely explanation. I've really never been impressed with anything much that he's done as a non-whacked out slow character. Kind of sad. In a weird as hell way.
I think the book and the movie were equally good, but I saw the movie first, and I tend to prefer whichever version I got exposed to first.
I'm going to have to read the book now. Then review it just to get Jack all in a huff in case I like the movie better. That sounds like an excellent use of my time!
But wait - there are no bloody knives in A Simple Plan! What were you wasting your time on it for?
The Bloody Knife Credo applies only to books. In movies, the blood can be supplied by other means. I do have some standards, after all.

Sue,
Two years after he vaulted onto the world stage with Slingblade, Thornton gives what I consider one of his finest performances to date
What does it say about an actor when all his best performances are in mentally whacked-out or "slow" roles? He's a scary man, that Billy Bob. But I agree, he was good in this one.

Dragonfire,
We saw this for the first time several years ago and rented it again for the Minnesota w/o - it has such a great Midwest winter feeling. I hadn't realized it was based on a novel, either - it seems they differ quite a bit.
Now stop working so much, I find that doing such a thing greatly cuts into one's internet time ;)

Brian,
Only 158? Come on! Let's get another couple dozen on there! This is a good addition, though. The score isn't restrained in all places - there are a few soaring moments here and there, but overall it's wonderful. The movie benefits greatly from it.
I expect that queue to be at 200 by the end of the week, mister!

I saw this not to long after it first came out to rent. I did like it. I hadn't realized it was based on a book. Hmm..may have to try to find it..once I'm not working a million hours a week.
Great review. :)

You'd asked earlier about the current size of my Netflix Queue. It just now grew to 158. Lovely review, as always! (And Danny Elfman writing a gorgeous, restained score? I've been a fan of him for a long time, but these days i admit that surprises me. And pleases me.)
cheers,

Hi Kath,
This is one of very few movies I've seen more than once (discounting the 800 viewings of children's movies, of course). If anything, it's better the second time. If you like Thornton and Paxton, and aren't looking for something light, this is an excellent choice. Hope you like it!

Re: -------- (Reply to this comment)

Oh, for God's sake, Jack.
Jack's comment contains major spoilers!!!!!!!!!!
Warn the people, will you please? Sheesh.
Anyway.
I will actively avoid a movie version of a book I truly love. I'm always disappointed. I haven't read this book, maybe that's why I was able to like the movie. I like how they did Hank - letting him remain accessible and someone we can relate to. I think he still is exactly what you refer to, just not overtly. I though this helped rather than hurt the moral ambiguity of a lot of the situations. I think I need to read the book.
And I still love the ravens.
