This is one of the few Disney animated featured films of my lifetime which I never got to see in the theater. But I have seen it in the comfort of my own home, and I think that it definitely stacks up against other Disney movies.
The story is old and familiar: A baby is shipwrecked with his parents, who are killed by a jaguar. A gorilla who lost her child to the jaguar that same night hears the baby's cries and takes him in. The boy is named Tarzan, and he grows up believing that he is simply a misformed gorilla. He is forced to overcompensate for his human weaknesses in order to please Kerchik, the gorilla leader and mate of Kala, his "mother."
His life becomes more complicated than he could have dreamed when a party of people arrive in the jungle and he discovers that he is not the only one of his kind. As he and Jane, the young British gorilla enthusiast, grow closer and he begins to learn what it is to be human, Tarzan must decide where his home truly is: with the gorillas who have raised him, or with the human with whom he has fallen in love.
And even that is not the only complication. Clayton, the tour guide for Jane and her bumbling father, plans to capture the gorillas and ship them off to be sold. A tough young gorilla played by Rosie O'Donnell and a neurotic elephant played by Dennis Nedry (the "Jurassic Park" character with whom I always associate him) are on hand to provide assistance. They also participate in the memorable wordless song "Trashin' the Camp" sung by 'N Sync. Phil Collins lends his voice to all the songs in this movie, which he wrote. The award-winning lullabye "You'll Be in My Heart" appears near the beginning and is a testament to a mother's love.
Tarzan couples stunning animation with memorable characters to produce a story of love and devotion which shows that no matter what we look like on the outside, our hearts are the same.
