And there really is no way to be "short and descriptive" about this movie.
320 reviews and counting, the vast majority of which seem to love this movie. Is it because the movie itself was so good, or the demographics of this group lend themselves to appreciation of fanciful, bizarre, and surrealistic trips?
I take that back...this is NOT a movie, this is a FILM, in the true sense of the word. The pabulum that serves as entertainment coming from Hollywood lately does just that: entertains. FILM makes us think, involves us in the process, engrosses us in fantasy and storytelling that is sometimes unimaginable. Camera angles, lighting, acting, editing all blend together to expose the "being and nothingness" of our existence.
Orson Welles had it. Francis Ford Copolla had it. Bergmann had it. The ability to send our hearts and minds to a different place, to confront the drudgery of our hectic lives with a view through their eyes. Now Spike Jonze has brought us into a life through Malkovich's eyes, through Jonze's.
If you have a computer with video input and output, try connecting one to the other...directly. You will see an infinite replication of the screen image within itself, where every mouse movement is repeated, perfectly reproduced, forever into the depths of the screen. This is the feeling you get when Malkovich goes inside himself, only to be confronted with...himself, and himself, and himself. Malkovich. Malkovich, Malkovich? Malkovich!
