I have to agree with gungian. I enjoyed the movie but unfortunately I have not seen
Das Boot yet. And seriously, Matthew
McCaughney, can he act? I have not noticed,
he is so cute, hee, hee. ;-)

Good review, cutting through the hype, and pointing out the delightful factual and historical inconsistencies. Only in American studios would we take a story based on a true event by British submariners and turn into an American adventure tale. Unfortunately we have to settle too often for "watch it, don't think about it" movies these days. Das Boot WAS the real thing. I even thought Red October was better.

This is not . . . (Reply to this comment)

. . . an historically sensitive film. But then, it is not intended to be a documentary.
It does accurately portray submarine operating procedures for the most part.
With the recent sinking of the Russian submarine Kursk, there may be renewed interest in this movie.
