"Where the Heart Is" is not a thriller, action adventure, or other form of eye candy; no reason not to wait for video. It is also good film that is easy on the pallet; worth a theater trip. In either case "Where the Heart Is" is a movie to see. Here is why…
The basic summary goes something like this:
Our Heroine, Novalee Nation (think Star Wars and Queen Amidala), is your standard inbred hick who is being dragged to Vegas by her standard bottom feeder boy friend. During a stop at a Wal-Mart the boy friend takes the opportunity to ditch the lady, who is seventeen months pregnant, to pursue his ambitions in Country Music.
Being broke, really pregnant, with no family, and no prospects, Novalee sees no choice but to use the Wal-Mart as a cut rate motel. Hanging out at the store after hours, during the day she wanders around getting to know the town and befriending the locals. After the baby is born, Novalee becomes a media marvel as the mother of the "Wal-Mart Baby". Her fifteen minutes in the spot light don't amount to much, and after a very entertaining cameo by Sally Fields as her mother, Novalee finds herself out side the hospital just as lost as she was at the start. Only now she has a baby to care for.
This is where Stockard Channing shows up putting in a great performance as the kindly and helpful missionary type and kicking the real story into motion. "Where the Heart Is" is the tale of how an uneducated woman with nothing to offer the world, becomes part of a community and starts giving back to those who have helped her.
The details? No spoilers from me. You should discover how a good film turns out by going to see it for yourself.
"Where the Heart Is" is heart warming without being a tear jerker. It is funny without being a farce. The story is believable without getting boring. While I would rate this as more of a video-tape-at-home movie, it is worth the eight bucks to see it in the theater. The director is trying to provoke a warm fuzzy, so "Where the Heart Is" definitely qualifies as a Chick Flick. It's a fun Chick Flick though. This is one you guys should suggest going to see. It will make your gal think you have a heart without it feeling like a trip to the dentist.
The Whos - Staring: Natalie Portman, Simon Bennett, Ashley Judd, Stockard Channing and Joan Cusack. Director: Matt Williams. Producers: Matt Williams, David McFadzean, Susan Cartsonis and Patricia Whitcher. Adapted for the screen by Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel from the novel by Billie Letts. The money goes to Fox.
The Bads - Its an unremarkable film. Entertaining but not particularly memorable. The sub-plot involving the boy friend continues to the end and seems to exist only to allow for the predictable, sappy, and stereotypical happy ending.
The Goods - Everyone put in a great performance. The acting by all parties was superb. The story was for the most part believable,. Simply stated, it was fun.
