When I picked up Beethoven's 3rd at Blockbuster a couple of days ago, the first thing that I noticed that none of the original characters were in the movie. I thought to myself, well, this could be my experience with the Addams Family again. After all, I had just rented the Addams Family Reunion earlier this week and had a horrible experience watching that movie because none of the characters seemed to fit with their roles.
In this movie, I had to say the same experience happened, but it did in my expectations. Even my youngest son's first statement about the movie when it started was, "Where's Ryce?" I knew that something wouldn't be correct when he said that, but as he watched the movie, he began to get more involved with the current characters.
The family that the new Beethoven movie is about is actually the brother of the original Newton family. They are meeting up with the rest of the Newtons at a family reunion and Beethoven is shipped to them right as they are fixing to leave.
On the trip, Beethoven makes a mess of many things but in the end it comes to light that he is actually trying to protect all of his new family from a couple of computer hackers who has stolen a computer program and recorded it on a DVD. These bandits are reminicent of the bandits on Home Alone. And the comedy scenes involving them are also similar to those of the bandits on Home Alone as well.
In the end, the hackers are caught and Beethoven is, of course, the hero. However, if you're expecting this movie to have the quality of Beethoven or Beethoven 2nd you will be very disappointed.
If you have a very easy child to please, this movie may work for a rainy day or school snow day. However, on its own it's not a very good movie at all and I do not give it a very high recommendation at all.
