Appreciate the comments, esp. about your father and how emotional it was for him. I don't know the Chinese legends and still felt tears near the end. This is a film that I'll be rewatching a number of times....

Crouching Tiger! (Reply to this comment)

Bravo, John -
Let me echo your sentiments one by one (imagine me doing so). I loved this film and, aside from the marvelous Wonder Boys and pending a screening of Traffic, can think of no film this year that more deserves the Best Picture honor.
Your point about naysayers and nitpickers and Kane and Vertigo is well-taken. Few ever mention that the Madeliene-reveal in Vertigo is almost a frame by frame reconstruction of a similar reveal in Chaplin's City Lights. I don't remember who said it, but some wag once opined that "artists borrow, genius' steal"
That being besides the point and of interest possibly only to you and I, Crouching Tiger made my dad, a stern and scholarly fellow, weep. It was, he told me, a dream of his to see the stories of his childhood translated to film in a way that he imagined them.
A statement like that from a man I admire, love, and deeply respect is enough for me to ignore a legion of naysayers and smarty-pants that have, somewhere along the way, lost their ability to be dazzled. If for no one else, CTHD will be a special film for me, for the memories of my father when he has gone, and for my children when I tell them of how much it meant for an immigrant lad to see the tales of his youth marveled at and appreciated by his adopted homeland.
Nice review, John - spread the word.
Best,
Walter

Please note that I used the word "should" ... am well aware of the Academy's limited views on awarding the true BEST.
