Dear grimjack: I think the opening is meant to suggest the heroine's repressed free spirit, which she must live in her imagination, as the ending is her escape from conformity toward her dreams.

Buscemi's character is meant to be an impression of the Director, who got his start by hunting up a legendary Blues man, about whom he made his first film.

Excellent review.

You've spared me the need to write about the film, which I saw recently. I agree with most everything you say about the film, although I see it slightly less comedic. It was more like a black comedy, as you stated, but much more poignant than most probably recognize.

The brilliance about this film was its commentary about American loneliness. Though Enid seemed witty and sophisticated, in her heart of hearts, she was out of place in the environment in which she lived. The ending suggests as much [which I won't give away].

From the beginning credits of watching Happy Indians dancing to their rock music, we see Enid float through her day, trying to muster up something of interest in her otherwise very banal existence. And while everyone around her continues to live life, she's trying to find happiness, not realizing that it is the daily living of life which provides it. She watches everybody around her find somebody, and in her search for doing the same, she realizes that there's more to life than finding an other half. She has to find herself.

Nice review of a very decent, quirky, film. I was somewhat disappointed in it, but I think it's overall themes, at least, in my interpretation of them -- was very well thought out and portrayed by the actors. They all did a good job. And everybody is right about Steve Buscemi. He's a fine actor.

Grimjack,

A very impressive review. Eloquent, detailed, yet honest. I have not seen this movie yet but heard all about it. Now I know that I have to see this movie for sure. Thanks for a great assessment.

Re: ... Birch vs Ricci (Reply to this comment)

You sound like you are in the know about this, so I'll have to take your word for it. However, I do want to say that there is a good chance that this was being made shortly after the Oscar wins for "American Beauty", and in that case generally speaking, Birch would have been just as well known as Ricci to the studios.

Good point about "Tree's Lounge". I never have seen it, but really should. Usually when a big name actor makes his directing debut, it stinks, but when a well established independent actor tries it usually work out great. I was especially unaware of the underlying similar plot with the young girl.

I'll let you know when I see and review it here.

"As a matter of fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if Ricci was offered the role first, but wisely turned it down.

Doubtful. Both the director and writer (against studio wishes) did not want a name actress, but rather a lesser known.

I really like this movie and feel they picked the perfect Enid.

Bill

...buscemi did have another lead role, in a film he wrote and directed, a great little gem called "Trees Lounge", where - if i rememeber correctly - he also got involved with another younger girl who formed a crush on him (a supposedly 17 year old girl, played by the lovely Chloe Sevigny).

But nit-picking aside, great review of a wonderful film. I agree with the other comment, Buscemi deserved an Oscar for this one - or at the very least a freaking nomination!

take care,
chad.
