neilkoomen's Full Review: Hedwig and the Angry Inch
Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.
I'll start off by saying this: I enjoyed this movie so much that I wish it was longer!
As has been pointed out elsewhere, this may be the first rock musical where the music really does rock--it's everything David Bowie wished he could be in the early '70's, and the movie's music is clever and funny also.
This movie and the music really do rock--there's hard rock, power ballads, and even a country-rock number--and there are even some serious thoughts, as in the song "Origin of Love." And there's a surprisingly large amount of animation, which transitions effectively from the scenes of the musicians playing shows.
It's quite a funny movie too, especially when Hedwig ridicules himself onstage.
What's not to like? Well, if you're not a rock music fan with some awareness of the '70's, it may be less rewarding. Also, if you're not comfortable with seeing men kiss or discussing gay sex occasionally, you might be uncomfortable with the movie. But the gay male characters are integral to the movie and what I saw is necessary to the movie.
Me, I loved it, and hope to see it again at the theater--it's too much fun to wait for it on video.
