Pros: Great performances; Russell Crowe; good story; Russell Crowe; Russell Crowe.
Cons: None
The Bottom Line: Russell Crowe gives us another Oscar-worthy performance in this true story of a brilliant, but disturbed man, who suffers, but ultimately triumphs.
Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.
How does he do it? How does he entirely transform himself into every character he plays? If I were to write the life story of Russell Crowe, I would call it: The Becoming. That's why he won a Golden Globe for this movie; why he won an Academy Award for "Gladiator"; why he'll probably win one for this movie; why he should have won one for "The Insider". "A Beautiful Mind" is the true story of John Nash, a brilliant man with a big problem: he suffers from schizophrenia, and not a mild case of it. The wonder of this movie is how we experience the schizophrenia along with John/Russell. You will route for him, you will suffer with him, you will cry with him, and ultimately, you will triumph with him. Many people are complaining about certain aspects of this movie because they feel deceived by the experiences of John Nash that seem real but are not. But in order for the audience to truly know John's heartache, we must be able to "go through" what he went through. Ron Howard does a tremendous job pulling it off. And we are amply rewarded at the end.
