Plot Details: This opinion reveals major details about the movie's plot.
I AM SAM is a movie that made me laugh and cry. I was crying in the middle of the movie. Most people were crying at the end.
Sean Penn is Sam Dawson, a retarded man. He has an IQ of a 7 year old. But, he has a job at Starbucks, an apartment, and now a baby/child. He makes friends with a homeless lady and make a baby. He names the baby Lucy Diamond Dawson, after the song. When they are leaving the hospital, the mother tells him to catch the bus and she runs off into the crowd leaving Sam with a newborn baby.
Sam knows the basics of a baby. He knows that they have to have diapers and baby formula and such. He is in Target trying to shop while holding Lucy. He has a neighbor named Annie that helps him out with Lucy. Annie is Lucy's piano teacher.
Sam loves Lucy very much. He reads Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Suess to her every night. Sometimes more then one time. When Lucy turns seven she begins to have problems in school. She doesn't want to be smarter then her daddy. Then the school calls and tells Sam that she doesn't want to learn. Her friends begin to make fun of her and Sam because he is retarded. Sam throws Lucy a surprise birthday party and one of her friends tell that she said that she was adopted and that Sam was not her real dad. She runs away from the party. When the police find her they put her in foster care. Sam then has to fight to get her back.
Michelle Pfeiffer is a lawyer named Rita Harrison. Sam and his friends got her from the Yellow Pages because she has a large ad. Sam is willing to pay, but she is a rich high powered lawyer and she wants no part of this until she is embarrassed before friends and takes on the case “pro-bono”. Sam knows that she is sad about her husband and son and gives her intelligent and practical advice.
Lucy gets sent to foster care in the care of a woman named Randi. Randi and Lucy are painting a picture one day and Sam comes by to see Lucy. Sam doesn't stop because he thinks that Lucy is better off without him. The next time Sam sees Lucy, she is very angry with him.
What happens between Sam and Lucy? What happens when they go to court? What happens to the case? What happens between Rita and her husband? Go to the movies and see!! It is worth the time!
I enjoyed this movie very much. And yes I cried and cried. This is a very touching movie to see. I thought that is was very well played out by Pfeiffer and Penn. Lucy will grab your heart in this movie. If you like the Beatles this is the movie to see. The Beatles music is all the way through it.
Thank you for reading and have a good night!!
