Pros: Great cinematography. Some creepy scenes.
Cons: Not too original. Poor editing. Slower paced than it should be.

I loved this film from start to finish except for the cheesy fight scene at the beginning. They could have either left it out totally or done it differently.
I admit the subtitles were in the way most of the time. I saw it in the theatre, the best place to see any film, and really missed out on the movie itself since i was having to read the whole time.
Aside from that its great. It amazed me because in my opinion it educated people on that little known bit of history when there actually was a similar event that took place. From what i have studied in the field of Cryptozoology (study of animals that are out of place or no one knew existed, i.e. nessie and bigfoot) the wolf-like beast in the legend was a Spotted Hyena. That you can tell by looking at the way it is shaped; high shoulders, low head, sloping back, etc. etc.. And in response to one particular summary someone did of this movie (they were unclear about the beast's anatomy/body armor) it was infact encased in armor, which is plainly stated in the film many times if you only pay attention. In the end(without giving anything away) you can easily tell that it is in armor. As far as the legend itself goes, who knows how it ended up in France, but stranger things have happened. Either way it makes for a wonderful story line for a movie.
I also didnt have any trouble at all following the plot. It was really quite simple if you pay attention. This film isnt for anyone who cant sit still for ten minutes or is easily bored.
Some things in the film were a bit far fetched i admit, but really is worth it to see. I plan to watch it again, only this time i wont worry about subtitles. Since i already know the story i can just sit back and enjoy the scenery!!

Excellent review. It told me everything I needed to know. Thank you for enlightening me about the opening scene. It seemed familiar but I didn't make the connection to Jaws right away.

In fact this movie seemed familiar to me in many not-so-subtle ways. There was the obvious Matrix-like freeze-frames that you so eloquently talked about. We also had a little bit of Dangerous Liasons thrown in, in reference to the who-house. Mohican-esque like you said, I would also put a pinch of the Mummy-series.

When the naturalist came back from the dead, I just about cracked up as I thought of the Rainbow and the Serpent. How appropriate as Iroquois is a derogatory name for Mani's tribe given to it by its enemies meaning snake.

The whole thing was so hackneyed that the creators (who are obvious lovers of cinema) seemed to decide to through chunks of other movies into a blender to extract a shooting script.

I decided to check out your review after looking for others who didn't rave about how wonderful this film was. I was very impressed with your details and learned much more about the movie from the information.(It was killing me where I'd seen Mani before....that makes me nuts when I can't remember)My review of this movie was my first and I'm glad I didn't read what you had written prior to my writing it because it said just what I was thinking and so much better.

Grimjack,

Another great review. I will definitely have to check it out. I actually haven't heard much about this film until a friend of mine up in Southern Cal actually saw this movie during its limited release and told me that it was very stylish and surreal. Sounds like my cup of tea!

The character (Mani) whom you were referring to (which you were not familiar with) is martial artist Mark Dacascos. He's one of my favorite underappreciated actors (saw him in a couple of great flicks: Drive and Sabotage). Hopefully this film will help Mark win more fans in the states...

Splendid job, my friend.
