Opinion Summary
every breath you take, every smile you fake
by voxpoptart | Apr 08 '03
Pros: Good acting (great in Robin Williams's case), expressionist lighting, passionately empathetic script.
Cons: It's a couple of sentences too long.

Thanks! I'm glad my take made sense. And yes, in case it wasn't clear, i still think Breakfast Club is (on balance) pretty great.

... about THE BREAKFAST CLUB. It's one of my all-time favorite movies. But, as I wrote in my review, I felt that despite the revelation within the group the chains of society had not been in any way loosened, thus making Bender's arm-thrust kind of inconsistent with the rest of the movie.

For a while I was kind of ambivalent about ONE HOUR PHOTO. I thought it was good, but not memorable - kind of like MATCHSTICK MEN. But, after reading your review, I see now that I watched it as a thriller, and therefore just took everything literally.

Great review.

A general and warm thank you to everyone for the comments. Specific responses: i agree that this is the sort of movie designed to inspire random acts of kindness (and maybe it will despite the ending!). I agree that the Breakfast Club is still, on balance, an excellent movie, although somehow Ferris Bueller, precisely by mixing great scenes in evenly with awful ones throughout, is less of a disappointment (besides, the end scene with Cameron is brilliant). I did not ever expect to see Psycho and the Breakfast Club validly compared, and am amused to see it done.

And yes, Mike, i kinda know what you mean - i hope i didn't render the actual watching _too_ unnecessary. There's always a tradeoff: do i want to talk people into watching this, or do i want to assume they will anyway, and just want to make sure they watch it right?

cheers,
- Brian

I like your take on this flick, and I agree about the ending. It was completely unnecessary. Without it, everyone would be kept thinking about Sy-and wondering why he did what he did. It may have even provoked a random act of kindness or two.

I'll back track on all your reviews in the next week or so! I feel like I made a great discovery here....thanks for stopping to let me know you're "here"! Jude

I like your mention (Reply to this comment)

of the scenes with the kid being creepy. They're creepy because, well, Sy is creepy, but also because years of news and movies have taught us that this is unhealthy behavior. We just aren't prepared for Sy to not have those ulterior motives. Another great review -

Voxy-

I haven't seen such a smart movie show such complete last-scene incomprehension of its own purpose since the Breakfast Club ended with Ally Sheedy's character getting a makeover and dating the jock, while quiet nerdy writer Brian, transformed by the day of revelations, demonstrates everyone's transformation by sitting quietly and writing a letter.

Have you seen Psycho lately? Same thing, there.

One Hour Photo is in my rental queue, to be viewed by me within the next couple of weeks. After reading your thorough and thoughtful review (damn, Brian, you are good), I almost feel like I don't need to see the movie, but want to see it more than ever. If that makes any sense.

Didn't know about the famous last words until now. Shame they would cop out on all they had built up, shortchanging the movie with such a cliched scapegoat.

Great review.
