Plot Details: This opinion reveals major details about the movie''s plot.
You have a very good cast here. Penelope Cruz, Halle Berry, Robert Downey Jr and more. So why didn't this suspenseful other worldly film gel?
There certainly was suspense. There were a couple of times that I actually jumped. But that's because of "Rachael". Rachael (Kathleen Mackey) is a ghost, whom I gather is at unrest, and although I did not know the actress' name who portrayed her, she did give me the creeps, at least twice.
There were also these little gaps in the story. Sugguesting you go down another road, but were really dead ends. For instance, the opening scene with Penelope Cruz talking directly at us (but really talking to her psychiatrist Miranda played by Halle Berry) about having sex with the devil.
Well, there is a beyond the grave thing going on throughout the movie, but it isn't the devil. He's not in this movie.
It's amazing, whether in a movie or real life, how indeed your life can drastically change almost overnight. Halle Berry is a psychiatrist who becomes a mental patient, at the same facility where she practiced. And, she is accused of murdering her husband. Talk about a nightmare...
Miss Berry gives a very good convincing performance throughout. And is haunted/contacted by the ghost of Rachael. Rachael is one of several victims. Raped tortured drugged and killed by a pair of serial killers. Played by two actors (Charles Dutton and John Carroll Lynch) who usually play cops or good guys. And Rachael is reaching from beyond the grave to get these guys, through Halle Berry's character.
There are a few things that bother me about the story. Why did Rachael have to "use" Halle Berry's character to kill the first guy? And how come, suddenly, Halle Berry's character had this "gift" for finding ghosts?
I was asked if I liked this movie...... I hesitated, all I could think of was Rachael. I think the actress who played Rachael did an excellent job. Appearing all of a sudden out of nowhere, making me squirm, waiting and watching for her next appearance...(shudder)
Although for awhile there I thought she wanted to actually kill Halle Berry's character. (See what I mean about gaps, and going down different roads....)
However, I was glued to the screen, I had to see what happened next. So that is a good sign. It definitely held my interest and attention. Yes, it was suspenseful. The acting, by the entire cast was very good. My only real criticism is I seriously think they should have done just one more re-write, and edited out those gaps etc and tightened up on the dialogue.
Personally, I think this movie is worth watching, at least once, but I would not add it to my dvd collection.
