Dave:

Yeah, man.

(Sorry, that just seemed the only logical response!)

I agree in principal, but just because it's not a great translation of Homer's epic doesn't mean it wasn't a great film in its own right.

(But then maybe I'll change my mind after reading The Iliad - who knows?)

My favourite comment on this movie... (Reply to this comment)

is from Ebert (among others), who points out that having introspection in a film taken from the Greek myths is completely missing the point of the Greek myths. Heroes in these myths are larger than life, and to have them sit and brood, wondering about their place in history, is just wrong. As another commenter pointed out, Achilles is a warrior, not an intellectual.

Oh please; a butt naked Brad Pitt; surely you were destined to love this film. What was Dave's reason, and before anyone mentions Diane Kruger remember that I shall be reporting all answers back to Dave's misses.

Hey Ed!

Thanks - I just read your review too and really enjoyed it, despite disagreeing with a lot of it! It's always good to see an alternative viewpoint well expressed.

The same reason I knew you would give it a low rating... (I have taste, you don't...)

BTW - how did I know you still can't type? (BUG surprise...)

Hey Quinn!

I'm not a great fan of Pitt either, but he was very good in this. Eric Bana is not an actor I'm very familar with but he's just fantastic in this - he may end up being praised by eps writers as much as Sean Astin for RotK!...

"I could take a pointer or two from you on how to write. " - now Quinn, you've been my favourite movie reviewer on eps for over a year and that's a compliment I just can't accept! (Maybe I should write more of my reviews at 3 in the morning if you really think so, though!!! :-P)

Cheers,

Ah well that would explain it a bit, thanks for the info. (I promise I will get round to readin g The Iliad soon!)

I will update the review slightly to reflect the fact that it deviates significantly from the book.

Thanks again,

I was really surprised when I saw that the few people who'd got here before me had given it a really low rating - but I guess it's either going to be your cup of tea or... not!

You're one of the few reviews I've read that have given it a full five stars...which is cool. Haven't seen it yet, but I keep on hearing that Eric Bana is brilliant. I just don't know if I can buy Pitt. I liked him in Fight Club...but in everything else I've seen him in, I haven't been a fan.

Anyway, great review, straightforward, well organized...I could take a pointer or two from you on how to write.

A agree with much of what you said about the acting and special effects, but a cliff-notes version of the Iliad would be able to point out all the errors. Characters like Odysseus were strained because, in the Iliad, he played a very small role until the Trojan horse episode. That means they really had to just make up most of the relationship between Achilles and Odysseus. I would think they were not friends though, since Achilles preferred brute strength to Oddyseus' smart plans. Also, Odysseus was the one who tricked Achilles into joining the war (Achilles' parents hid him from the call to arms by dressing him as a girl, but Odysseus put a sword in a handmaiden's basket to lure out Achilles). I would bet the two weren't tight friends like it is portrayed in the movie. My guess is that they made Odysseus a major character here so that they can later make a movie based on the Odyssey as sort of a sequel. Also, Achilles is portrayed as an intellectual like the heroes Theseus and Perseus (the Athenian heroes), when in reality he was just a pure warrior.

seen the movie w/o knowing about the poem. I am the first to admit that knowing Homer ruined it for me. I was totally shocked when the whole movie took place in only 2 weeks ... there was no coming up from that.

I was just thinking that myself.. at..er..5.45am!

I still haven't made my mind up about this bloody film.. I'll probably see it eventually, I think I'll wait for video, though.

At any rate, grand review, Sir.

Hey George!

Great insight, huh? I've never been accused of that before!

I was kind of dissapointed with Oddyseus character right from the start here especially with as good an actor as Sean Bean playing the role - in fact, it was the only real disappointment of the film for me. (I was kind of expecting Orlando Bloom to be uninspiring, so it wasn't a disappointment as such to find I was right!!)

Cheers,

CaptainD

only part I was a little disappointed in was not showing the cunning of Odysseus, who was a fox in both the Iliad and the Odyssey, where he of course took center stage. Great insight, Dave!
