Jaan-

No nude Pamela Anderson, G.W.F. Hegel, Britney Spears, Odilon Redon, Monica Bellucci, Angelina Jolie, Imogen Cunningham, Heidi Klum, Anna Ohura or Lois Tarkanian; no naked Chloe Sevigny, Christine de Pizan, Lindsay Lohan, Salma Hayek, Jean Dubuffet, Kelli Garner, Soren Kierkegaard, Paris Hilton, Jenna Lewis, Chu Mei-Feng, Athanasius Kircher, Severina Vuckovic, Christina Aguilera, Art Tatum, Scarlett Johansson, Jessica Paré, or for that matter, any hot videos or photos of Margaret Cavendish, Sofia Kovalevskya, Mary Somerville, Freya Stark, and Emily Barlow.

While I appreciate the absence of any naked/nude Hegel/Kierkegaard/Tatum/et al. flesh, I am sad to learn that "Ong-Bak" does not take advantage of the buxom Ms. Paré. She was the best thing about Denys Arcand's "Stardom", an otherwise forgettable movie about a girl goalie with D-cup breasts, whisked away from her small-town Ontario existence onto the runways of Paris. A completely believable story, if you ask me.

Much like "Ong-Bak", I presume.

Tell me: relative to Jet Li, Tony Jaa has:

More charisma ___
Less charisma ___
An equal amount of charisma (that is to say, no charisma) ___

The fates await your answer.

Raask-

First of all, the skill with which you analyse Asian movies is impressive.

Thanks.

I've watched several in the past few weeks, (House of Flying Daggers, The Heroic Trio, among others) with the intent of reviewing them- or at least quartering them and skewering their heads on a pike to display outside my fortress- but have been unable to refrain from ethnic slurs, references to physics, and general incoherence. How do you do it?

Hmm. Let's just say I've spent many an hour wrapping my head around both Japanese and Chinese tongues (languages), and have earned a tremendous appreciation for these cultures. That doesn't necessarily translate to blind love for everything about each (including the many poor films that are produced, along with the excellent-- like anywhere I suppose), but anyway, something like familiarity or at least understanding.

Still, this review is difficult to evaluate in terms of its helpfulness. Did you critique this film on the same scale you use to critique others, or do Asian movies follow entirely different criteria?

Forget "Asian movies" (as this is an awfully large category), and I'll say: no, I used a differernt scale. The genre film doesn't get the same treatment as... say, Nobody Knows (Japanese, recently reviewed), which is altogether more complex and rich. You raise a good point-- I'll think about these things if/when I review my next slasher/horror/kickboxing film.

PS. I tried to integrate a comment somewhere responding to the naked Hegel/Kierkegaard bit, but the idea was just too bizarre, even for me. That's a good thing.

Pity-- those were tossed in especially for you. Thanks for noticing, though. I would disembowel myself if you simply left that un-commented upon.

Comment title score: 76%. No Golden Twinkie (cf. response to earlier triumph).

Ah, yes, and I threw her in to the mix especially for you (along with Anna Ohura), the same way Hegel and Kierkegaard are dog bones for our Swedish halfling (half-Swede?). Indeed, Ms. Paré starred in the Canadian Lost and Delirious about lesbians in high school (or was it thespians?). If you haven't been there, then do that.

Much like "Ong-Bak", I presume.

Aye.

I'm afraid the answer (and I hadn't computed until you asked), is c) equal i.e. no amount. Actually, he's got a wee bit, but further evidence is needed... He's still so green.

Lost and deliriously,

In short, no. Praytell.

Re: Kung Fu Hustle-- I think I saw a preview. If you can catch it before I do, by all means, review away, meine liebe. But all is fair in ____ and reviewing, n'est ce pas? (It is hard to imagine I will beat you to it.)

Off the top of my head there is a big spray painted "Mr. Spielberg You like my film? call me! Lets do a film together!" or something like that on a garage door during the "flee" scene.

I thought it very amusing.

And I just bought the Kungfu Hustle DVD... MUHWAHAHAHA

*ahem*
