Plot Details: This opinion reveals major details about the movie's plot.
There probably isn't a genre of film that I dislike more than romantic comedies. They are almost also predictable and boring. Sadly, in most cases, they are extremely misogynistic which always make their appeal all the more puzzling to me. For every When Harry Met Sally, there is Failure To Launch, Beautician And The Beast and the recent Kate Hudson/Sandra Bullock's collection. So, whenever I go about watching one of these films, I already have a built in repulsion.
It was not without reservation that I sat down recently to watch Hitch. It certainly offers a few elements that I actually like. I enjoy Will Smith in most things and Kevin James makes me laugh most of the time. Eva Mendez is also easy on the eyes and usually fun when she's on screen. Of course, there's that pesky plot and the inevitable contrivances that are sure to drive me insane.
Hitch focuses on Will Smith's conveniently titled character, Alex Hitchens (aka Hitch). He's a date doctor and he teaches men who are unsuccessful at dating how to get the girl. His theory is that if you can get through the third date, you're "in." He takes on several clients, but none is more desperate than Albert Brennaman. (Kevin James). He's a loser with girls and in love with one of the country's most famous women. Oh, and to top it off, he's an accountant.
There's no doubt about it, Hitch is smooth. Nowhere is it more evident that when he meets Sara (Eve Mendes) for the very first time. She's a leading gossip reporter (hmm, I wonder if that will come into play later in the film?) who is both headstrong and confident who doesn't feel the need to date as it "takes up too much time." So, when they meet, it's the grudge match of the century...the immovable object meets the irresistible force. Both come off as confident and smart and clearly into each other. She's neither intimidated by him, nor swooning uncontrollably, which is such a welcome change to this tired genre of films.
Hitch uses his charm as well as his tried and true methods to win Sara's heart. Unfortunately, their respective jobs cause havoc for their relationship. Her investigative reporting indirectly "outs" Hitch as the date doctor and puts all of his clients in jeopardy, specifically Albert's budding relationship with the lovely Allegra Cole (Amber Valletta). She's disgusted and feels manipulated by Hitch. Just as quickly as both of the main relationships hit a snag, they are just as quickly mended and the film ends on a not surprising happy note.
It's important to note that the movie does not break any new cinematic ground. Hitch is a relatively standard romantic comedy but it does manage to offer a few interesting and entertaining nuggets. First and foremost is Will Smith. He's been a part of several entertaining films like Men In Black and Enemy Of The State. But, even when the film is sub par, he's still a joy to watch on screen. Here, in Hitch, he exudes the same confidence and sweetness that makes the film work, even on a contrived level. Kevin James and Eva Mendes are equally as good. James has the goofy sidekick role down perfect and Mendes plays Sara better than most would have. She has to be just as confident and smart as Hitch while still being vulnerable to his advances. Without a doubt she succeeds.
Hitch does manage to entertain a little more than most other films of a similar ilk. As I mentioned, the performances are all quite good. And, it does offer some genuinely funny moments when Smith and James are on the screen together. They both have a good sense of comedic timing and their scenes together are some of the best. Smith and Mendez also have remarkably good chemistry when they share the screen as well. Their love feels just as authentic as the scenes of hatred and disappointment they share.
There are a few problems with Hitch that do need to be mentioned. One major issue is the overall plot of the film. It's as predictable as you would expect. There isn't a single plot point that doesn't impact the movie. Sara's job as a gossip reporter leads to Albert's romantic relationship which points directly to Hitch's career. It wraps up so nicely into one neat package. Nowhere is this more evident that when Hitch first asks Sara out. There are just way too many things that have to go perfectly in order for the scene to work. And, big surprise, it all happens just the way it is supposed to. It's also amazing how in a city as large as New York, the entire cast of characters all seem to live in the exact same world. Again, this isn't unique, as so many other films incorporate the same tactic. But, it still isn't any less annoying. The final complaint I would offer is the total lack of chemistry between James' and Valletta's characters. Never once did I think this couple was truly in love.
There are some extras included in the Hitch DVD but nothing that would be described as groundbreaking or terribly important. There are the standard inclusions like gag reels and deleted scenes. As always, deleted scenes are deleted for a reason. Don't expect these to add much. There are also five featurettes, "Dance Steps Made Easy," "Hitch Style," "Dating Experts," "Love In The New York," and "Will Smith's Red Carpet Race." I can't recommend any of the featurettes. They aren't inherently bad; they just don't really offer much entertainment. Finally, there is also the music video for the Amerie tune "1 Thing" included on the DVD.
Is Hitch a great movie? No. In fact, it's barely a good one. But, the personalities and the spots of humor make it watchable. While technically a romantic comedy, I can recommend it slightly. There are only a few movies of this genre that I can whole heartedly recommend. But, there are hundreds that you should avoid. And, Hitch is not one of those to avoid. Feel free to pick it up if you want some lighthearted entertainment for the evening or a lazy Sunday afternoon.
