Plot Details: This opinion reveals major details about the movie's plot.
Holy crap! This movie is totally insane. If this was meant to be Godzilla's last movie, then they sure packed everything they could into it - it's almost as if they just crammed every Godzilla movie together to create one of the most wacked out and unsubtle movies ever made. I'm not really going to waste too much time on the plot, cause, there's not much of it. It mostly seems concerned with monster battles, which the movie makes quite clear.
The movie starts out with a quasi-Matrix fighting force that apparently has been assembled to fight the monsters of planet earth. The "plot", if it even can be called that, involves supposedly benevolent aliens who turn out to be bad guys (just like in many of the other Godzilla films) and unleash all of the monsters, save Godzilla, upon the earth to wreck havoc (like in Destroy All Monsters). In fact, this movie is essentially a remake of Destroy All Monsters, just more crazy and mind numbing.
It's a rather hard movie to review because it's basically a string of action scenes tied loosesly together with an incredible lack of character depth or real storytelling. It's also an amazingly bad rip-off of The Matrix, with a car chase scene that seems to come directly out of The Matrix: Reloaded and various other stunts and fights and "bullet time" that were almost directly lifted from The Matrix. The fight between the hero of the film and the leader of the evil aliens seems to echo the fight between Neo and Agent Smith, even some of the dialogue seems familiar.
The best character in the film is the leader of the aliens - whether he was supposed to be intentionally funny, or, if his performance is sincere, is not quite clear (thought I'd bet on the former). The highlight of the film is when a (badly) animated Godzilla from the 1998 version made by Roland Emmerich in the United States is unleashed on the rubber suit Japanese Godzilla by the aliens. The true Godzilla makes fast work of the imposter - to which the lead alien says: "I knew that tuna eating monster was useless!" It's obvious a slam against the crap-tacular American remake, and I had a good laugh.
If you wanted monster fights, don't worry, this isn't the kind of Godzilla movie that you'd watch for hours and during the last ten minuted Godzilla finally shows up, takes a dump, and then returns to his island - no, there is so much mindless action in this movie that you can actually feel your brain cells die as you watch it. And I think, that's what Godzilla movies are mostly about anyway, and it's about time they made a Godzilla movie like this - all the current Godzilla movies, save Godzilla: 2000 pretty much suck, they weren't even fun to watch for their inane goofiness, like the Godzilla films of the 1960's. This one however is a ton of fun and I recommend it to all Godzilla fans!
If you are not a Godzilla fan...steer clear from this film. It actually is a truly bad movie, if you're wanting an honest evaluation, and the average viewer might feel assaulted by the totally brain-dead nature of this movie. But if you're a fan and if you want to see a good Godzilla movie, see this one. It's got everything you could ever wish for in a godzilla movie: cheesy special effects (although this time they're quite impressive for a Godzilla movie), laughable script, stupid characters, rubber monsters, and tons of non-stop, brainless action that only a Godzilla fan could ever love. So, overall I'm giving this a good review, cause I like it, and I recommend it overall, though I must warn you it's not for everyone.
