That was my feeling as well. I know there's a loophole there somewhere for Cyclops to come back.

I would think there would be too. He's been too imporant of a character for the X-Men for too long for that to be it.

Cyclops did get the shaft in this one. He was around for maybe five minutes and then it didn't even fully tell what happened to him. What a rip. Though I think there could be a possiblity that he wasn't dead since Logan and Storm didn't find his body..just the glasses sort of floating. And she was doing something completly different with him and that kiss than she did to ..other characters later on. At least I think she was.

I thought Cyclops got the worse shaft in this movie. Of course we only have Jean's word that he's dead, but she was crazy at the time. Maybe he's not really dead. Who knows.

I agree with that. The Phoenix was such a big, complex story that it really needed to be the main focus of its own movie. It could have worked to build up more if she wasn't brought back this time..and that would have given Scott more time to show what he was going through.

The Phoenix storyline was too big for it to share screen time with anything else. I personally think they brought her back too soon. This movie could have dealt with the ramifications of her "death".

That could have worked and would have built up the Phoenix more. Either way, each of those story lines should have had their own movie. There just wasn't enough time in one movie to adequately deal with both - unless it was a lot longer.

It totally could have gone that direction. I think the cure storyline was more interesting than Dark Phoenix for the third movie. My gut feeling would have said to bring Jean back in the fourth movie to build up the anticipation.

That's true. It just was kind of bad that the Sentinels weren't used more. If the cure story had been done a bit better, they could have been used to round up the mutants for the cure or something.

I'm glad the Danger Room was finally utilized like that. It's easy to start a story in there without having to explain anything.

It could have been. The fight scenes that were in the movie were good. And the Danger Room bit did fit with the X-Men since they used the room a lot.

I know. I so thought they were in some sort of real fight. I was thinking even that they went and jumped to the final battle early and then would jump back for the movie or something.

When I first saw the Sentinel head roll out, I thought "Oh boy, this is going to be fun". But when the DAnger Room scene ended I went "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!" Oh well, it was fun when it lasted.

I noticed the Sentinel in the Danger Room. I thought that was cool too. I had read something that said the Sentinels were going to show up, so I was expecting just a bit more than what was there. But it still worked well.

I understand the thinking of showcasing a bigger world where mutants are a part of it, but you're right, a focus on a smaller group would have made more of an impact.

I can understand that too. It just seemed like no one received enough attention in this one.

That was a pure fanboy moment. Actually that Danger Room scene at the beginning of the movie was an adaptation of The Days of Future Past storyline with the Sentinels. I thought that was pretty cool.

It would have been better if the movie was more focused on a small group of main characters. Even in the first two movies, some of the characters didn't receive as much attention, but at least they weren't left basically standing around twiddling their thumbs in the background.

It was pretty cool when he threw Wolverine. :)

That's what everybody is questioning as well. Why reduce some characters, and favourite ones at that, to cameo appearnces? People want to see what they can do instead of just standing there looking pretty.

At least Colossus got to wax his body. I mean wax his metal.

True. Though if he hadn't done the metal thing, he wouldn't have been recongizable either.

But I have to wonder...since some of those characters were basically just..background and didn't do anything, why go to the trouble of making them specific characters - like Jubilee or Psylocke or whoever - and then not let them do anything. I suppose we should be glad Colossus got to do his metal body armor thing.

Jean Gray has died and come back so many times in the comic that it's hard to keep track. At least it fits with her codename Phoenix. Magneto has been the same as well. It's whatever the writer at the time feels is the best.

That is true. I fully expected when I saw X2: X-Men United for Jean to be back as Phoenix in this one because of all the hints througout the movie.

I think the main reason for not including the Beast was a cost factor. It was going to be expensive to do both Beast and Nightcrawler in the second movie with all the makeup work. Look at Mystique? That takes a good 8 hours to do every day, I believe. But because Mystique was barely in this movie and Nightcrawler was absent, old Hank McCoy got the spotlight.

You could be right. Mystique was way underused though. And I missed Nightcrawler. I was disappointed when I found out he wasn't going to be in the movie.

Totally wasted potential.

Yes. Though it was cool how he spun Wolverine around and then launched him into the air.

Hmmm, you could be right. Seems like the most logical place to put her as well. That or she might have been with Magneto's crowd. That's for the eagle-eyed fans to spot for me.

She was around the school briefly in the first two movies so I figure she was there somewhere in those scenes. But I have to wonder...since some of those characters were basically just..background and didn't do anything, why go to the trouble of making them specific characters - like Jubilee or Psylocke or whoever - and then not let them do anything. I was hoping there was going to be a loophole somewhere. I know it is more possible in the super hero type of movies, but that doesn't mean it always happens. I would have been really ticked if there wasn't one.

I liked Grammer's performance and the Beast is one of my favourite X-Men characters. I'm glad he got some face time.

I'm glad he was in the movie too. I've heard that they wanted Beast in the first two movies but had to take him out because they were sure how to handle the character. At one point, I heard he was going to be done like Gollum with computer animation. I like that makeup was used instead, though I've heard Grammer hated all the hours in the makeup chair.

Oh? Ah ok I didn't realize she'd been an assassin before. I must check my books again. I thought maybe she was with Magneto but wasn't sure. I know from stuff I read that she's been a character a lot of fans were hoping to see. It just seemed like such a wasted opportunity to just have her sort of in the background of a few scenes and that was that. It seemed sort of wasted to have Colossus around the way he was too.

Totally wasted potential.

About Jubilee..in the first two movies she was barely around too. Mainly just briefly shown in a classroom or something. So I'm think she must have been in that scene when Charles was talking to some of the students near the beginning. And maybe briefly when some of the students were shown ..crying and upset about the one development. I think I sar Siryn then too. Maybe. But it was so quick I could be wrong.

You are correct. Psylocke was with Magneto. Even though she's with the X-Men in the comic, she started out as an assassin, not entirely on the side of angels. Psylocke was one of those cameo appearances in the movie. As for Jubilee, I saw see was listed as well but have no idea where she was in the movie. Definitely need to get the DVD now to freeze frame everything.

Anyway..I knew the general plot was dealing with the cure and Phoenix. There also looked to be a funeral in the trailers. I didn't like that idea at all. I did kind of having a feeling what would happen with Cyclops - not exactly how it happened, but that it did. I didn't expect what happened with other characters. I was really...upset by what happened to one. I'm being vague here so I don't spoil anything for anyone reading the comments that hasn't seen it yet. I was feeling a bit better about it after the movie was over though. Did you stay through the credits to see the short scene that was added in? Some interesting possiblities there.

I saw the surprise at the end of the credits which, in turn, really wasn't so much of a surprise to me. I figured there was going to be a loophole somewhere.

I wasn't sure what to think about Kelsey Grammer as Beast at first. Then I got to thinking more and it made sense. Beast was highly intelligent and Grammer has shown that he can do that sort of character on Fraiser. I did think he did a good job with the character.

I liked Grammer's performance and the Beast is one of my favourite X-Men characters. I'm glad he got some face time.

I don't know who made the decision, but someone just crammed too many of the characters into this one and too many of them basically had nothing to do. Rogue was limited to a few short scenes..Cyclops even less - though I did hear that Marsden asked for his part to be smaller because he was in Superman Returns too. I saw that Psylocke - hope I spelled that right - was listed in the cast but I have no idea who she was. I'm not as familiar with her. I saw one person that might have been her, but that person was with Magneto and I thought that Psylocke had been an X-Man. And where the heck was Julibee?

Hey J,

Now, I just have to ask: Where the hell did you see Psylocke??

Psylocke was played by an Asian woman named Mei Melançon. She was with Callisto when Magneto first made his appearnce at the mutant rally. It was kind of hard to spot her because she didn't look anything like you expected. She did have streaks of purple running through her hair. I guess that was her identifying mark, but yeah, she was there.

Did you even know Omega Red was somewhere in the film as well?

I'm such an X-Fan (my first issue was #171 when Rogue joins the X-Men) that I went to see the movie with an open mind despite the negative grousing by many that Singer left the project.

I have to say that it wasn't as cohesive as X-Men 2, but the action sequences were done so well that it made me feel like a little kid again. I enjoyed it very much and thought overall, it was a job well done.

Now, I just have to ask: Where the hell did you see Psylocke??

Mobi,

Stewart has the X-Men leadership role already, give him too much screen time and everyone else might become secondary. Then again, put too many X-Men in the brew and none of them gets enough screen time. There are enough X-Men to make hundreds of movies in this series, what's their rush to introduce so many?

I just wanted Stewart to have a more active role this time around. First movie he was in a coma. Second movie he gets abducted. They treat him like he's helpless all the time, yet he is supposed to be one of the more powerful mutants out there.

And I agree with having too many X-Men on screen all the time. It works better when a few select get featured. There's so much they could do with the rest to continue the franchise with other stories.

If you had the opportunity to "cure" yourself of a "disease", would you be so bold to do it?
If that "disease" has positive effects only, I'd line up to be infected instead ;-)

Hear, hear. Who wants to be the same as everyone else? My mutant power is the ability to never have any money at all. Top that one.

Doc,

See. I need to see this movie just for that casting... how fun is that? A mutant radio shrink..

I thought it was a great casting call to include a furry mutant shrink for the part. And he was blue as well so there was no mistaking who Grammer was playing.

I agree about Picard, man, he really should have more screen time in the first two... sorry to hear that wasn't righted in this one.

Picard has been getting the bum rap since he's been stealing the show during his Star Trek. He traded the Captain's seat for a wheelchair. Of course one has to feel sorry for the dude.
