Children of Men
Chaos of Men
Children of Men is far from an original film. I viewed the film at a sneak preview while traveling abroad. It is actually a very familiar post-apocalyptic theme film with very little new and fascinating to offer the viewer. Though it pains me to say this about this film because I truly love some of the performers that lent themselves to this project, although, I have to question why they did. Clive Owen and Julianne Moore are truly gifted performers. Michael Caine even made a brief appearance.
The film is set in London in the not to far future and the world is plagued by a new dilemma, the infertility of all women in the world. The film begins with an interesting view of the death of the highly spoiled and celebrity youngest person in the world, a young man of eighteen named Diego. It seems the entire world is searching for answers to the infertility problems and for any woman who can help to continue the worlds population by giving birth.
One rebel group, The Human Project, has actually discovered the one pregnant woman in the entire world and is struggling to save her and her unborn child. Theo (Clive Owen) is a disillusioned government worker that is drawn into the chaos of saving this young pregnant girl by Rebel Leader and Ex-lover, Julian (Julianne Moore). Theo is snatched up on the streets and in some way convinced by Julian to assist them in getting the young pregnant girl, Kee (Claire-Hope) to the Human Project. Theo engages the help of his eccentric and reclusive friend, Jasper (Michael Caine).
It is not long before Theo and Kee are in a race for their lives, and Kees unborn babys life as they struggle to make a connection that will get them all safe to the Human Project. The rest is rather typical of this type of film. There is killing, chases, murder, chases, gunfire, and yes more chases. Much of what is going on and much of what is discussed is very unclear throughout the film. Exactly what is the Human Project and exactly what can it do? Good Question, but there was not a good answer I am afraid.
Children of Men is not a bad film; it is just not a very good film either. If it were not for a few Performers and performances, the film would not be worth seeing at all. Clive Owen and Julianne Moore would be good in even the worst of films. They added just enough to this film to make it palatable. Michael Caine was really great; however uncreative the story might have been, Caines performance was top rate.
There is not a lot of positive things I can say about this film in general, but the performances by some stellar performers make it a film that is not a total waste of time. There were some interesting visuals and action scenes. But the film was still very predictable and stall over-all.
