LaFeet's Full Review: Hewlett Packard 39g Graphic Calculator
I was in need of a new calculator. I am taking courses that allow me to use a programmable type as well as volunteer as a "mentor" for middle schools. As I did not think that the kids I helped would get the hand of my trusty slide rule, I decided to shop around for a calculator. I started at the local WalMart and did not have to go any further.
I chose the Hewlett Packard HP 39G mainly for two reasons: price and capabilities. While it is not a true programmable, I found the features of this calculator more than enough for the job at hand.
This calculator has large keys with wide spacing help minimize keystroke errors. This is something that my fat stubby fingers enjoys. The slide on cover that keeps the screen and keyboard safe when not in use.
A large {131 x 64 pixel}, high contrast screen in textbook mode provides clear and easy viewing of the task at hand. And the split screen of the 39g allows you to see math relationships for useful comparisons.
As a mentor I really appreciate the fact that I can connect my 39G directly to a personal computer. It even has a connection for overhead display products like Proximas. Utilizing a built in two way infrared port allows transfering data with other calculators.
Using a feature referred to as "interactive history" you can recall and reuse previously created solutions. An excellent tool for teaching.
Hewlett-Packard's e-lessons (aplets) are adapted from topics in textbooks. These aplets are electronic lessons to help you learn math and science. You can create your own e-lessons, and they are simple to work with.
Easily read keys and menus that provide for fast access. And data entry can be entered in simple algebraic notation, just like equations written on paper, allowing simpler entry and understanding.
The 39G has 256KB of built in RAM which allows more difficult equations to be entered and solved.
Algebra and Trigonometry features include factorization, expansion, substitution, linear equations, matrices, hyperbolic functions, degrees, and radians.
The HP 39g is certified for use on college entrance examinations such as AP, SAT and PSAT/NMSQT.
All in all a complete calculator that is easy enough for a fifth grader to use, but powerful enough for a college calculus course.
