Grand Cayman is a small gem nestled below Cuba in the azure waters of the Caribbean Sea. I visit the island many times a year. I am very fortunate to have parents who are full time residents there. But even if they didn't live there, Grand Cayman would still hold a special place in my heart. The island undoubtedly has one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Seven Mile Beach is a strip of sugar white sand, that runs along the west coast of the island. One of my favorite past-times is sitting under one of the majestic Australian pines, with a great book and a glass of wine while the sun sets. It is glorious!
The waters here are second to none. The visibility is around 100 feet deep. The sea is always warm and clear. Incredible reefs surround the island, teaming with unbelievable sea life. There are very shallow reefs and wrecks right in the harbor. Many tourists take a chartered sailboat trip out in the Sound to feed the famous stingrays.
But most spectacular are the wall dives! It is an amazing feeling floating over a wall of coral that descends to unknown depths..words cannot describe this, it must be experienced! There are amazing corals and sponges in irridescent colors, caves and valleys mazed throughout the reefs,and vast arrays of fish everywhere you look.
Grand Cayman is not the best place to go if you are looking for wild and crazy nightlife. There are no casinos and most bars close at midnight. It is a British Crown Colony, and they have pretty strict Blue Laws.
The best thing to do at night is probably a night dive!
Also, restaurants are relatively expensive. The US dollar is worth only $.80 CI, so you get less for your money.
Also, don't expect any farmers' markets or straw markets. There is nothing really like that there. The locals are definitly not sitting out trying to sell straw hats to people! They are too busy running banks and law firms!
If you're in the mood to relax..this is the place to be!
