Say WOT!?! (Reply to this comment)
by AinsleyJo
This wonderful review of an area that's very precious to me inspired me to do something I should have done ages ago: add you to my WOT!!!
I think that this has to be THE best review of the area I've ever seen!
You're definitely "my" kind of people--and you know another favorite of mine, Bill Thomas!
Anyway, this review blasts right off the charts when it comes to being quality stuff!
Kudos!
AJ :-)

Great review! (Reply to this comment)

When I read up on a park, then I love to know about the history and other things in the area. It takes a long time to find all that other places. Tks for the great info. This sounds like such a wonderful place to visit.
The red button story sounds like something my crowd would do (by accident too). Kids always liven things up.

Re: Sorry (Reply to this comment)

Quasar,
No apology is necessary, I respect your right to rate as you see fit, but "off topic" really does not apply in this case.
“you say very little about the park itself”
I copied and pasted just the information about Mammoth Cave from this review and ran a word count. The section about Mammoth Cave National Park contains more than 1800 words.
This is considerably more information than many reviews contain. I respect your right to rate as you see fit, but I certainly neither understand nor agree with your rating.

Sorry (Reply to this comment)
by quasar
but you say very little about the park itself, instead telling us all about the surrounding towns and other parks in the area. Perhaps this would be better placed in a more generic destination topic?

A Few Thoughts On This Wonderful Review! (Reply to this comment)
by kcfoxy
As always, this generous review is at least 3 regular reviews long, and could very easily have been broken down into a series.
When is your book coming out? Travels with Howard, I mean...
Flower pot bread, white bean soup, Country ham and the best peach cobbler at The Whistle Stop? Howard, you are doing it to me again!
I've been to the Wigwam tee pee units in Holbrook on Route 66 and these are totally cool!
The scenario of chasing a wounded bear into the cave must be a familiar scenario. I remember a trip to the much smaller Oregon Caves, and the same way the "entrance" was discovered...BTW, for a number of years I wanted to be a Park Ranger, as well!
I love the coolness of limestone caverns. I never wear a jacket, as all the tromping among the stalactites and stalagmites, flows and draperies keeps me nicely warmed up.
Those rail splitter pictures must be awesome...just like many of the other ones you've mentioned from "travels" you've so kindly taken us on in months and years gone by. My wish is one day to see some of these wonderful photos, which brings me circular-fashion back around to the question of your book/books...

Never heard of a Dr. Peeper. Does that have a Kentucky Fried Chicken flavor? No, well, you've stumped me again. R-E-S-P-E-C-T, find out what it means to me!

Bet I've (Reply to this comment)

...seen some of Bill's photos (especially those from National Geographic). And, I do remember hearing/reading about the cave-in at Mammoth & Sand Caves and Floyd Collins' famous tale of tragedy. Of course I've heard about, read about, and seen movies on Jesse, Frank & the James gang. But, so much here was not known to me, and that any of this was in Kentucky was a true revelation for me!
Thanks so much, Howard. As usual, your superb review is an eye-opener! Take care,

Great review, Howard! (Reply to this comment)

I love Mammoth Cave (although I don't like the one tour with all of the steps) and the surrounding area. I wrote a review on it back when I first started writing here; the surrounding area is just beautiful and there is so much to do. I can't wait until my daughter is a little older so we can go explore it together.
Great job!

review..I had heard of Mammoth Cave but never really thought much about seeing it, until now...I do enjoy caves but have really only been in 2 here in America..You've made Kentucky one of my premire destination points for the future..Have you thought of submitting this to the Kentucky tourist bureau??..Wait, dont do it until I get there!!!LOL
I saw that movie with Kirk Douglas...had no idea at the time just who it was about...I'd really like to see it again now..:)
Thanks for an eye opening and tantalizing travel review once again

Thanks, Howard, for letting us ride along. I only went to one underground cave in Wisconsin with my dad when I was a kid; it scared the hell out of me. I love your food section0s and the kitsch sounds great.
