Although Palo Duro Canyon State Park is beautiful all year round, I highly recommend seeing it in the summer so that you can include tickets to the musical drama "Texas".
This is the 35th year of the musical and it has entertained people from all over the world. The musical is performed at a special amphitheater inside the canyon, using the beautiful cliffs of the canyon as a backdrop. It tells the story of the earliest settlers of the area, the farmers vs. the ranchers. Dancers from all over the world audition to be a part of the show. At one point during the show there is a terrible thunderstorm and the bolt of lightening during the storm is one of the most exciting and colorful moments of the musical. The only drawback is that the canyon experiences sudden rain showers sometimes in the summer and the play has been rained out one or two times.
The Canyon itself is well worth seeing for the spectacular scenery. I recommend getting to the canyon in the late afternoon so that you can watch the canyon walls change from varied yellows and browns to breathtaking oranges and reds. There are many water crossings and caves to explore. Lots of hiking and camping, if your family enjoys those activities. If you are not a country person, be on the lookout for tarantulas. They won't hurt you if you keep your distance, but they are scary to see.
My family lives nearby (my mom-in-law was once worked for the musical company) and we get to enjoy this scenery everyday. I think that everyone should see this canyon for themselves and enjoy the history of the Texas panhandle.
